My psychologist, who administered the standard MENSA test was amazed I could read or hold a conversation. My IQ is in the 0.13percentile, but I do some things okay.

@Sarg0n i've seen in print fischer's iq as listed as 180.... supposedly he was pretty fluent in several languages --- like his mother, regina. course, he was a messed up example of a human being.........but i digress.
this article points out that people who have higher iq's relative to the general population might gravitate to chess... i think that makes total sense, and wuold account for the (potential) higher iq's among chess players - and not that chess increases iq. the highest iq in the group of guys i played with belongs, i assume, to the neurologist in our group. but he was one of the weakest players.

I think Fischer was a role model like any champion.

He (RJF) was batshit insane - but a splendid chess player.

He had controversial opinions but that doesn't mean he's insane. He was however, and I think this is the word you're looking for, abrasive.

@Sarg0n
How about batshit insane with a high IQ? or is it impossible?

Insane = not being aware of things around them and how stuff is. Good luck making decisions or playing chess without being grounded. Doesn't make sense , think about it logically

@TheThirdMouse You can arrive at weird conclusions from weird assumptions while being logical.

@blacksalt if you are logical than it's not weird. It's honest. Logic is rooted in the empirical, delusions are rooted in the paracosm

chess is a bunch of patterns, openings, tactics, strategies.............it's completely possible to be excellent at those and be absolutely out to lunch in.................uh everything else..... fischer could give you every variation and then some of the ruy lopez, while at the same time spouting off about the injustices done to him over his life......this could take as long as he could continue blabbering.... he's one of my idols, actually. an imperfect one, to say the least.
