FIDE suspends GM Christopher Yoo following new harassment allegation

@QueenRosieMary said in #6:

I was wondering how long it would be before someone came along to try to cast doubts on the woman's testimony as if she just made it all up to damage his reputation and end his career.

if you read the various articles referenced in the blog, especially the Hindustan Times, you will note that there were many witnesses to these events including friends and an IM who were quoted in the articles.

So saying "apparently there is no evidence but her word" is patently untrue. There are witnesses and they can make witness statements to the authorities, testifying to what they personally witnessed. These witnesses can be called to give evidence to any inquiry or investigation. She is indeed lucky that there were witnesses, because in many such situations, there are none and it is just he said/she said.

I think he was trying to state what is happening most often in the world. Some women will tell lies blatantly and that will destroy a man's career. There are lots of examples for this. "I was wondering how long it would be before someone came along to try to cast doubts on the woman's testimony." There is a reason why we cast doubts on the woman's testimony because most of the time it is not true. I'm not trying to spread hate or trying to defend him because I genuinely feel that Yoo's situation is true, especially after seeing him punching a woman and also the jump to the stage to receive the price. Maybe, there is something wrong with him.

"because most of the time it is not true"

Where is your source? These kind of cases are spread on incel forums and don't match reality at all.

"What is most often happening in the world" so you think women lying is the default state, and occasionally one might tell the truth?

Do you have any evidence for this?

And you are confidently asserting that "most of the time" a woman's testimony is not true and that is why you cast doubts on it? "some women will tell lies blatantly", well I am sure a very small minority might, just as a small minority of any population might.

What a dangerous and wildly inaccurate thing to say... This is why women, who are genuine victims of harassment and assault are routinely ignored, silenced and shamed for coming forward because of people putting this kind of untruth forward as facts.

I am not a man or a woman. I am French Brainrot so IDK what you people are talking about.

I find it troubling that he was charged only with 4th Degree Assault in that one case. I understand he was upset, but that does not excuse physically assaulting someone. Once again, a privileged man gets to walk...

I completely understand the seriousness and harmfulness of his actions, and it is indeed unacceptable. An OTB 2-year ban would also not at all be unreasonable imo. However, I would argue that the GM title is awarded not on any behavioral basis but only on chess skill, which Yoo has demonstrated. I don't think any behavior outside of those that influence play, such as cheating, harassing opponents during the game, match fixing, etc. should cause a chess title to be revoked. Also, if FIDE had the authority and capability to revoke titles based on behavior, the titles that are meant to show chess skill could be revoked by a small group of people in authority if they disagreed with a player's opinion, behavior, and could become risky and arbitrary for players.

I agree. Everyone needs to calm down and stop insulting women, and insulting people with real mental health diseases. I know an autistic person, and he's a great guy! He's funny, he's nice.

By "Going overboard" I believe they mean that the people on the message board are going overboard, not you, but you have the power to take it down. And of course they meant to write "Guys." Sometimes it's important to give people the benefit of the doubt.

and that he has a particularly frightening "CV" already at that age. That's serious. Two serious incidents in less than a year apart.

And can you imagine how the victims live? Filming a tournament and a participant deliberately hits you from behind. Playing a tournament with the fear of being followed by someone with hostile intentions. This is not normal and I find the media unfortunately too discreet about it - probably because he is a GM.

I agree and believe FIDE has reached a level of blatant unprofessionalism, endangering players through pathetic organizations, a perpetual quest for the most lucrative events possible, and partnerships and leadership that are becoming questionable.

And that it is time for players to create their own federation, reconnecting with FIDE's original respectful and humanistic values.

This GM should have been suspended for several years already with the videographer case. He should have undergone advanced therapy, courses, met with specialists during this period. And a ban from competition without anyone to accompany him during and after matches (this could be a FIDE official or a specialist). Here, I have the impression that the previous case was forgotten or neglected by FIDE.

OTB chess never ceases to digust and scare me.

even if he apologized I still feel like something is wrong I mean 4th degree assault that is not right and saying housekeeping at the door and knocking the door for 10 min or so is beyond limits he should be suspended for 2 years AT LEAST!

Ah, the fresh smell of chess drama in the morning! Glad this is reported... his actions are reprehensible, in any venue, whether sporting or casual. Stalker vibes are uncomfortable, but the fact that he continued after being blatantly told to fk off is suggesting some kind of mental issues. I hope he finds the right medicine to return himself to society , and not as a Cringemaster, as that clearly seems to be overshadowing his Grandmaster title.

Given the nature of the first incident and of the second incident, I don't want to know what a third incident would look like. Enough is enough. I hope he gets banned from tournament play for a long, long time (after a fair investigation of course where he can give input).

Of course that is very bad for GM Yoo's career prospects, but that is on him.
