Chess Broke My Heart... Here’s Why I Still Can’t Quit

@V1g1yy That special kind of pain when you see the brilliant move... right after the game! And bless your opponent for that diplomatic response - sometimes mercy is better than pointing out the Ne4+ that's screaming at us from the board. We've all been there!

@dPawnAfterDentist Ouch, those 'almost glory' moments from years ago really stick with us, don't they? Being top seed and that close to the title... that's the kind of tournament story that keeps visiting us at 3 AM!

I have a story: my most recent tournament (almost a year ago now) was a 3 round rapid tournament, 30 minutes for each side. In round one, i won, but in round two, i lost an exchange, my opponent skewer my queen to my rook with his bishop. The funniest part? He offered me a draw like 5 moves later! Being down an exchange, i accepted immediately. Afterwards i asked him why, he said that i was winning! I was like so confused. I wanted to go over and look at my game with the scoresheet. But i forgot the scoresheet at the tournament hall! Anyways i went on to win round 3 and got second place ;)

"What’s the hardest lesson chess ever taught you?"

That there is something horribly wrong with my brain.

"What’s the one moment that made you stay?"

The epiphany that I could go on playing chess as long as I'm playing weaker players.

When I was around nine years old, I participated in a local Rapid 10+0 tournament. After the last round, me and another boy had the same amount of points, so we had to play a tiebreaker game. Due to the strict time schedule, the organizers said that we had to play a 5+0 blitz game instead of 10+0 rapid, and I got absolutely obliterated by my opponent because I was terrible at blitz. I remember being very sad and upset about this decision. I still haven't managed to win an OTB tournament, no matter what time control, until last week, when I finally came first in a classical OTB tournament.

(I totally did not lose to an 11 year-old in round five)
