My own comment #42: My opponent could actually be a cheater (maybe not, cuz I beat him), because his account got mysteriously closed after the game ( I played 3 games with him, I lost one and won 2). So having a ridiculously high difference between FIDE and lichess could have 3 reasons: Either the player is cheating, or his last OTB game is a long time ago. Or he is just lying about his FIDE rating, to make an impression that he is a bad player and then suddenly surprises.
It does seem strange that someone on here could have a lichess rating that would suggest that it would be a tough game for me, but a FIDE rating that would suggest that they are a novice. Makes me wonder if cheating on here is more prevalent than we are aware, because apparently you can take a strong lichess player but sit them in front of a chess board with the electronic devices put away and suddenly they are hanging pieces left and right. I guess it makes no sense to me because 10 years ago (when I last played an OTB tournament) I had a NON-provisional national rating of around 1850. I feel I’ve gained 100-200 points since then, but I’m still only 2171 rapid on lichess and a provisional 2224 classical on lichess. For me the difference between my lichess rating and my current national ability (not the 1850 from a decade ago) is probably around 200 points, where the lichess rating sits about 200 points higher than my projected current national rating if I still played national tournaments. I am set to resume national tournaments soon, so I guess we will find out.
