How to detect cheating?

Valid point - we need not discuss the algorithm/method used by lichess to catch cheats.

I was talking about how players can realize that they just played against a cheat and report sensibly instead of being clueless. A vast majority of players (strong ones included) don't even realize they are playing a cheat and they play a long match, instead of identifying quickly, and reporting them.

Some understanding should definitely help them. Eventually, the software/method itself can only do so much. Community contributions and reports help to identify early, in my opinion.
On a funny note, there was this compulsive cheat who was chatting with me...I told him I know it is you (The Cheat). So he went "How did you recognize me?"

I replied "It's a gift"
Perfection in any area of human life is not possible, so I guess we are stuck with very good and improving software detection products. I am not sure if we people can be objective or consistent enough to act as judge and jury on cheat detection issues. I would not like to think of Lichess as some kind of intellectual vigilante group arbitrarily accusing innocent players of cheating when all we really need to do is report and have it investigated by Lichess cheat detection systems. I like to think of myself as objective in most matters but I am sure I have falsely reported people I suspect of cheating only to find that they probably weren't and my suspicions were groundless.

Lichess does ok, I am led to believe it accurately catches cheats and expels them from the site. It's good now and will only get better. Until then we have to live with the all too human fallibility of our systems, but rest assured cheat detection may not be absolutely perfect but it will continue to improve.

To be honest I have never understood why anyone would want to project a false impression of their abilities and experience.

That's my tuppence worth
"if a 1700 rated player plays the entire game of 50 moves with a few inaccuracies and mistakes in a 1-minute game...you can be dead sure that you are dealing with a cheat."

Just saying, but if this was true you could have banned nearly all of the sub-1700 bullet players meanwhile. After a few hours of playing there will surely be some close to perfect games (especially when your opponent blunders so badly that you don't even get the chance to make a mistake yourself).
It takes a cheater to know a cheater—so if you want to be better at detecting cheaters I suggest you cheat yourself.
@gp469 as ridiculous as saying "before you join the police force, you need to steal something"
The police force need not understand robbers, all they need is the evidence. However, to catch a cheater, one must understand how they work, the art of cheating in chess, which means they must cheat themselves.
I wouldn't be surprised if most of the moderators of lichess cheat on alts.
@gp469
cheaters have nothing to do with artists. Same with robbery and other criminal affairs. Intelligent people are able to look through motives of criminals. They are not as deep as you may think. In Hollywood-Films this idea is quite popular but in reality its just ridiculous.

If the only tool you have got a hammer is everything resembles a nail.

However, there are more sophisticated tools available which take points of data into consideration the hobby cheater hunters might do not know at all.
