There comes a point where a cheater's opponents can recognize they're playing against a computer, I almost always know when a player is playing only computer moves.
When I was around 2000 rapid I played against cheaters one in 5 times, when i filtered out provisional ratings it dipped down to about 1 in 15, still an abnormal amount. I got out and moved out, I'd probably gotten at least 100 rating points back for cheat compensation during that time. It kind of tells me that at about that rating cheaters get caught by lichess autodetect and people start to understand when players don't play human moves.
Of course I'm not always right, but the report function exists for a reason, so we can use it move on. Anyways, once i reached the 2200 range i've almost never had to deal with a cheater.
The hardest part of cheating is when a good player starts cheating. If a player is good enough to understand when a game has reached a critical moment, then can turn on the engine for only a couple moves in the game and still get a lot of wins. One can hope that such players start sliding down the slippery slope and start using the engine more so they're easier to detect.
