How many cheaters OTB?

Legend has it he's still cheating as we speak

Legend has it he's still cheating as we speak

I don't think it's about addiction, I think it's related to a person's education and personality. Me, apart the fact I believe in correct behaviours, I want people to see me for who I am. If I'd cheat I'd feel a liar, I couldn't look at myself in a mirror. I'm quite a real person I think, but some people are fake, and don't care about giving an image of themselves who isn't real. I would lose the respect for myself if I did something like that, they don't know what shame is.

You're more accurate on that.I think once you make up a lie you'll have to live the lie that why a cheater can't stop cheating because they already have cheated in a lot of stuff games,exams anything in life so if they stop the truth will come out that they were phonies this whole time that's why they have to keep cheating to save face or something....cheating is actually more of a psychological problem it's just people don't see that ...I guess I went off topic for a while anyway thanks for the discussion I've learnt something

I once played against someone who cheated OTB, I think. During the first 30 minutes, he went out of the player's room and into the hallway three times. During that time we had played approx. 15-20 moves. Fortunately, I knew the opening he played quite well. He played white and a very aggressive gambit. But I felt that he knew everything. So when he went out for the third time, I followed him. I waited outside the toilet. When he came out I looked at him very sternly. After this he never went to the bathroom again. After the game I saw on the computer that all his moves were only the best moves. I noticed this very clearly in the position around his third toilet visit. I while after the third bathroom visit, it wasn't so difficult anymore. And I managed to end the game in a draw. This was for approx. 7 years ago. Back then, it was not so common to have so many checks and controls, as it is today. I think a lot of people cheated on the toilet in those days. If there is not thorough controlls at the OTB matches, there will be cheating in the toilets I believe. People can have their phones in tight belts around their foot, for example. The one I met cheated I think. He was a teenager I think. And he hasn't played tournaments OTB afterwards as far as I know. Not long after, GM Rausis was pictured on the toilet as you know.

I've ever been to a kid's tournament...I took my younger brothers to play in their first tournament and apparently a boy who was 11 was playing in the Under 10 category and the coach was behind him like showing him some weird hand signs but the boy was still playing bad moves so I didn't know if the coach was telling him to blunder or something but the boy wasn't getting the hand signs and was being frustrated all the time ...I don't think coaches should be even in the tournament room when a tournament game is on going well that's just me but the coach was really struggling...another thing is rigging games ...my brother won against two players who were from the school that made the tournament happen can you imagine they put that he lost in those two games and gave the two wins to their students so I guess that's another way cheating happens behind the scenes

It's pretty difficult to cheat and therefore pretty rare. You are not allowed to take your mobile with you and it's very suspicious if you often leave for the boy's room. The quota is not 0 of course but close to it. No worries.

2200 FIDE you need, if you want it. Or one of those many specific achievements you can find at Wikipedia
@Cedur216 Isn't it 2100 for CM and 2000 for WCM?
@Sarg0n Absolutely agreed, I have the same opinion @Basch_of_Dalmasca
@ArchivedChats wow that's really dirty :O

Just don't pee "often". Once per move is bad.
Well, it depends on how many minutes is one move. I remember situations when I went to pee 3 times in 3 moves, because they took about 20-30 minutes each.

Today I talked with a master (over 2000 ELO) who told me in his opinion 30% of people OTB cheat, and in the range 1500-1900 in his opinion this goes up to 60-70%. Seems a lot to me! What do you think? I respect him very much, and I think his opinion is very worthy. Other opinions?
When I play OTB 90 min games I always see people wandering and going to the bathroom, and I never suspected them.

Titled players' opinions are the ones I'm most interested into. I'm not very interested, instead, to the opinions of those who never played FIDE events (don't take it personally, but you've just never been there).
i have seen that 1 guy who lost in onl a few moves in the 7th round played a nearly perfectly game in the 6th round and was 28 times on the toilet but only 33 moves were played. I thin he was the only cheater in the tournament. There were 170 people who played this tournament so i think maybe 0,5%-1,5% cheat

He thinks in Open B the risk to find cheaters is very high because:

  1. They're local tournaments with very few security measures
  2. In his opinion club players are more likely to do that

Seems a lot to me too, but this person is very respectable, I know him personally.

Also, what makes you think here there're so few cheaters? There're a lot undetected, just look at how many people have GMs ratings without being titled players. Do you believe them? Some are titled players who decided to stay anonymous, but many are cheaters, just my opinion. I know one who got multiple accounts banned (even on Chess.com) who kept creating new ones, now he has an account here since 2021 and he is completely undetected. He uses his high ratings to play the strong one part and sells lessons, and he is completely undisturbed. He also claims to be a Master even if he doesn't have a FIDE rating. His actual Rapid rating is 2406, completely ridicolous.

@Tenakel I personally know him, I don't think so.

Yeah I know of another similar case, but continuing with @Cedur216 point, these are only 2 cases, from that to 30% there is a long way :)

Not long after, GM Rausis was pictured on the toilet as you know.

When this thread started talking about cheating I had this image in my mind. It's absolutely awful!
The punishment from FIDE was draconian: suspension and deprivation of the Grandmaster title.

I mean it had been an open secret for a decade!

What Rausis did can be considered madness to the method. No mercy!
