@My_real_name , try installing LiChess Tools and see if that can help with changing the way things look and work. Especially the Expand All functionality that effectively nullifies the new "disclosure" functionality.

I am always open to feedback on how to improve the extension as well, so if you want a particular functionality just let me know.

I like the new version, don't see the problem

I hope so.... and i just want to mention that up until this update i thought every single other addition and change that happened before was so good and i came to love lichess studies more than everything else on the net.
But my story is i have been on work leave for over 2 years and i have spending most of my time everyday building my repertoire with lichess studies. 100 studies, with each over 10 chapters containing each hundreds of positions. (I have had lots of people asking - my studies are private.) I put them on chess tempo and practice them every day. The amount of work i put in there in immense. That is why i was so shooked by the change and i apologize to lichess for the title and sounding dramatic but i cant find a way to change the title
dude, don't sweat the title. we're listening. i (personally) am not convinced that the seventh seal has been broken here, but lucky for everyone lichess is a team and our users are a part of it.

Tried this out and it's a definite improvement in terms of decluttering the page, so thanks for that. It's not possible for it to deal with the main issue of the insistence on a "main line" paradigm over an equal hierarchy though (i.e. https://imgur.com/a/wG6R9kq).

Do we really need to install something to get the old version back? I don’t even understand why it was changed in the first place.

@ChrisVinall wasn't it always like that? You can take the "main line" move and right click and "Force variation" in which case it looks differently. Do you want "forced variations" by default?

Can’t we just have it the old way? Like the way it was two days ago?

I've added colours to my previous image to illustrate the difference between old and new (and I think this shows what ChrisVinall means by the mainline priority, but maybe they can clarify).
I have two images with five variations underlined in both, with the same colours corresponding to the same variations. New: https://imgur.com/a/YLUvAsH and old: https://imgur.com/a/Bs9k1I8
In a game where we have the absolute main line (i.e. the actual game) we go 21...Nxb4 (gap of all the variations) 22.cxb4; so there is a big gap stuck in. Now this type of structure now exists in the variations as well. So in my example we have, under the new system 22.Qxa4 (gap of variations) 22...Bh6 23.Qd1 (gap of variations) 23...Bxe3+ 24.Kh1. (Gaps also exist under the old structure as well, but not the same sort.)
(It is also possible the old system ran into trouble with displaying things depending on variation depth/complexity etc., so this is just an example of how things work in, what is for me, a fairly normal use case.)
