“I like to play Chess960. I get bored from playing openings like the Slav over and over again. I think that in about 15 or 20 years we will only be playing Chess960.” – GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2750 FIDE)
When will this 1-2% take over a chess? It has been there for 15 years and the haydays even have gone.
There were championships in Germany (Mainz) around 2008 and it has been icluded in the FIDE rules, but nothing drastic has happened after that. It reached a solid carpet's level but will never take off. Those tournaments recently where So became Wch? Hardly anyone cares.
#4 So you don't worry about opening theory killing of our game (like Capablanca and Fischer)?
Capa and Fischer are dead and chess is more alive than ever.
I personally like studying openings, if majority of the professional players prefer playing openings to invent new ones every game, I think chess will stay as it is. Moreover, chess is a really complicated game, so openings are actually simplifying the game and make it playable for normal humans in my opinion.
Also, probably chess960 will only increase the number of openings you will need to memorize in professional level.
I still have trouble remembering opening names.
