Chess is recognized as a sport. The International Olympic Committee has recognized chess as a sport. While this acknowledgement falls shy of recognition as an "Olympic Sport" which would merit inclusion in the Games, it is an acknowledgement of the sport-like properties inherent in chess

From Wikipedia:
"Etymology

The word "sport" comes from the Old French desport meaning "leisure", with the oldest definition in English from around 1300 being "anything humans find amusing or entertaining".[8]

Other meanings include gambling and events staged for the purpose of gambling; hunting; and games and diversions, including ones that require exercise.[9] Roget's defines the noun sport as an "activity engaged in for relaxation and amusement" with synonyms including diversion and recreation."

So Yes it is sport, same as eating hot dogs on time or punching each others face in octagon, or chewing something in your mouth while throwing small ball to someone with bat, or jumping into the water while doing salto, or kicking air while screaming, or pushing piece of rock to slide through the ice and so on :]
