In short, sport refers to a physical activity and game refers to a mental activity.
So, chess isn't a sport, rather it's a game.

Yes. Mental Sport
Would def consider it a sport because it requires a lot of practice and exercise and it’s very competitive.

It is a sport.
If you want to argue it is not physical, look up "Calories burnt during a chess game".

Cambridge dictionary defines sport as follows
'a game, competition, or activity needing physical effort and skill that is played or done according to rules, for enjoyment and/or as a job'
I guess the physical effort is something that is most often associated with the word sport, so if this is the definition, chess is not a sport.

Well I was swimming for a little over an hour and lost 3kg I bet you can’t do that with chess 😂
Playing chess for the same time would be harder tho. Infinite times harder even. Got no clue how some people can stream chess for hours on end. I would die of a brain aneurism for sure.
I think I played 8 games in a row once, but every game was worse. When I’m playing tournament with 1 hour after 30-40 min I would like a break.

It's a sport because it requires you to use the muscle between your ears. Seriously, like any other sport, your level of physical fitness effects your performance.
Is NASCAR a sport? That's also done sitting down... Sports are competitive games, so of course, chess is a sport.

#37 There's no muscle between your ears; the brain is an organ that doesn't contract.
That said, I do believe chess is a sport. There is a physical component involved in playing a game for hours on end, maintaining concentration amidst spikes in heartrate, blood pressure, etc.
While not as physically demanding as the Tour de France, there are similarities and parallels to shooting, archery (at least those compound bows), darts, and billiards. It's far from a perfect comparison, as there is less reliance on hand-to-eye coordination and fine motor skills in chess, but I'd counter that with chess players being in better shape than some of those other athletes.

Yes.
like @viophile has mentioned: 'a game, competition, or activity needing physical effort and skill that is played or done according to rules, for enjoyment and/or as a job'
-
Is it a competition? yes, you are competing with other players on tournament or in WCH Match - 2 players are competing against each other.
-
There are rules? yes, in game and on the competition.
-
A game, competition or activity used for enjoyment and/or as a job? yes you can play chess for enjoyment or treat it a s a job for earning money or both
4 Activity needing physical effort and skill. Yes, chess requires a lot lot of skills and also physical effort. Here is a thing in which the most of common people don't understand that chess requires phisical effort, and I am not talking about chess hand shake. I' am talking about your physical preparation before any tournament or any single game in any time format. You want to play for 5 hours or more, you have to be in very good physical shape. Otherwise you will collapse during the game due to lack of stamina. Kasparov, Karpov, Anand, Fischer, Carlsen and many other pro players were very fit, hence why they could play for hours. Common people, or chess amators don't know what pro chess is about. That's why most of people think chess is only a game in which you have to use your brain, no physical effort. Which is not true.
Summarizing all aspects of the essence of the topic, I come to a fundamental conclusion - chess is a sport.
