It is both good. D4 is good for FIDE RATED players and intermediate and advanced players. E4 is good for beginners and intermediate players too but as a advanced player they don't like e4 much. There are people who loves e4 even if they are masters
Carlsen: 733 games with 1 e4, 541 games with 1 d4 or 1 c4
#1: Against 1. e4, Black has the Berlin and Sicilian. Against 1. d4, Black has the Nimzo-Indian (which White can avoid).
#15: Using a quote that is over eighty years old in a modern discussion is disingenuous.
I love d4
E4 leads to more open and tactical play in most openings.
D4, on the other hand, leads to longer, more positional games.
So, friends, this is all subjective. Choose based on what kind of chess you like.
Personally, I think that the d4 opening is very boring, and it leads to similar positions. However, the e4 opening can lead to diverse and interesting positions, such as the King's Gambit, which I enjoy playing.
Does it even matter, both of them are completely different with different playstyles and this discourse is kind of pointless.
