Multiple (duplicate) accounts policy on lichess

Though I am a penguin, my pet fishies (I am tempted to eat them) do keep accounts... Lucky fish. They get their fins on computers... Still, even all of them together can't beat me lol

The lichess policy on creating multiaccounting is that you can create multiple accounts if

  1. You aren't creating too many (I'd say above 3 or so is becoming a bit sketchy)
  2. You are creating them within reason (Berserk, blind, anonymous etc)
  3. You are not using them to evade bans of any type

I have been creating some to try to avoid the Lichess Username Detective (I am not telling who) but I gave up on that a long time ago... PS I know who CaptainBadAs is. If he knows you, there is no chance that he will fail to find your lichess username. Don't worry cuz he doesn't give it away.

@Sarg0n , but if sometimes you want to play anonymously, what I can totally understand, but is it on approximately the same rating that you are playing, or are you just having fun in lower level games?

@Funkmaus , I mean it's really not in the interest of lichess having multiple accounts, for example people having accounts with which they play tournaments, it's just throwing away the fun, because instead of taking part and having good games with other chess players, you just get completely destroyed all the time and you don't want to play at all anymore afterwards. People having multiple accounts for rating should be recognized easier and it should then be mentioned on their profile and/or the algorithm just lets them play against people with second accounts too.

Lichess is doing great job dealing with any kind of abuse. I never doubted that.
Sandbaggers, cheaters, spammers, trolls - most of them get caught sooner or later.
Anyway I am not sure whether they know who belong to who @sargon - I hope they do! :)

This thread is not about a person changing the name and using one account. Its about using several accounts same time.
I can imagine, @Saufenistgeil that you might think differently about "saufen" in few years :-) and select a new handle.
A name change (not capitalisation) will mess up everything. Probably hard/impossible to implement and I guess it causes a lot of confusion. It will be like what?! I have played XY several times but I dont remember their name :0
Also, I doubt that is any possible to differ first/second/third account and make a playerpool for them like already existing for banned users.

Important is what #22 says: "3. You are not using them to evade bans of any type!!!"
And again, what is a good reason: thats angrey area as it is nowwhere stated in ToS what qualifies and what not.

Thanks everyone for responding and btw. I have expected to be downvoted for this thread (which might happen now after saying this) - but there are 24 likes. :-) Thanks guys. Makes me feel like I am not alone.

The grey area exists because in this issue there aren't any "hard" rules... there can always be exceptions and people that actually use more accounts and with good reasons. In the end, Lichess mods make the final call if they think you are doing something wrong.
My best advice is simply avoid trying to make more than 3 accounts.
Also, examples of bad reasons for accounts include "This is the account I play on when I play badly". I'm not making that up, I've seem people use that excuse before.

I hope this helps address some of your concerns.

Stay safe out there!

It very bad not to have clear rules in online-community, dear TCF_Namelecc!
Actually, I supposed that the rules are stated clear: I have agreed not to create multiple accounts when I have registred!
This discussion seems to lead nowwhere, we are turning in circles.
Thanks everyone for the likes and for responding.
I hope that everyone who has read this will simply think twice about creating a duplicate account.

The policy is to stop people abusing it and creating like 20 accounts for random reasons, but if you have genuine reasons then 2/3 accounts should be ok?????

Oh listen dear @CalbernandHowbe!
I am neither a mod here nor have a clue what the official statement about multiple accounts is - I am just a confused user.
This is why I have opened this thread; stated my opinion as someone who uses SAME HANDLE since 2005 at any chess site.
Indeed, I had the priveledge to have a secret account on the chess-server where I was an admin, just because it is impossible to play chess and provide help or deal with abusers simultaneously.

In this thread people mentioned several good reasons why multi-accounting makes sense - I am not strictly against it and never was. I still think that online-community needs a clear stated rules - otherwise different complains arise which need an individual solution and cause more work for the mods.

Indeed, I had a small wish that those people open an account for berserking would place "berserk-account of @ - accountname" into their profile. To avoid confusion, to make things clear...
And, I guess, the whole purpose for strong and much followed people like you or NM mysterious_expert to have a secret account is to play unbothered.
I kindly asked if you guys are creating accounts for this - please stay anonymous.
Disable follower/follow option, no game-unrelated chat...
Making same friends under different accounts is not fair...
We all are originals, we exist only once :-)

Edit: "with YOU" I mean in general - I am not adressing you or mysterious_expert personally in this post!
