Recently there was a request to allow filtering public challenges to show only "random" color ones which I would found reasonable. (BtW, with recent enough browser, it can be achieved via custom CSS style.) This goes a bit too far, IMHO.
But then, I'm using this way to start a game only rarely, so I'm not really affected.
Absolutely, that would be a good solution. Except it doesn't change that there are people who have played over 20000 games with white, and none with black. It's much easier to stop the abuse by taking away the feature, then trying to work around a the people that take a nice feature and abuse it.

is this a joke? I'm simply not interested in playing black

Which is exactly why this was necessary to be enforced

Why do you want to violate my liberty?

Why do you want to violate my lilberty?
You can still invite people to play you with a specific colour. Unwilling participants in this abuse shouldn't have to exposed to it because you think your liberty means taking advantage of people of your own gain,

even if some players only play white, then their rating will reflect that they play white. If you play with black and win against them, you get rewarded as their rating is likely a little bit higher than would be if they were always playing black.
This seems more about envy of others players ratings, than there is a good rational behind it.
If you dont want to play a player, dont take his challenge! but dont force people to play chess in a certain way, like they need to play as many black game as white games.
In tournaments, ok, I agree, this option is taken away. But I want to test and prepare my repertoire as white because I am white next week OTB.
And why is this option even taken away when playing casual? C'mon!

What do you mean? When I create a game as white I'm not forcing anyone to join it.

Except for the people that are auto-matched against you. This update is a great thing for the platform!

I agree that in casual, this option would be acceptable. But in rated games, there is no reason why people can force others to play by their rules. Fair people that play in a rated pool are also affected by this, not just the abusers.
As for the rating argument, I think that's weak. That's like having players on a tennisclub forcing others to play them but only when they are allowed to serve. It's a nonsense, unfair attitude for the sole reason of getting a personal gain at the expense of others. Being against that isn't quite the same thing as envy of the very rating they are manipulating
