This is due to https://github.com/lichess-org/lila/commit/cdee6ec7245145a9c61fff2c9e18d49984f56f3b.

No rationale has been given, my guess is that too many people choose to play with White (and then complain in the forum that the pairing algorithm tends to give them Black in subsequent games).

ok, maybe too many people like to be white, but why also taking away the option to chose black? certainly not too many players want black? But I do! to train my black repertoir before an important game.

And even casual games - I canot chose white or black.

And if lichess takes this option away, why let it be there in grey, if you have never the possibility to chose the side?

Nobody asked for this limitation, and other chess sites (like chess.com) offer it, so why not lichess? Why give a reason to go to chess.com?

Well said! Nobody wants all these constant changes, e.g., this is a massive letdown and a big reason to finally switch to another site like chess.com! Useless rubbish to drop the option of colour. I will abort every game I get with the unwanted colour, so expect an even worse site due to this shit modification. I think the site has declined considerably since 2021, it is clearly to me that changes are made for the sake of making changes, so some freaking “developer club” can report that they are “vibrant”. I also hate the braindead blogs about improvements which basically is nothing more than egos making ads “give me money and I can make you better”.( Buy a freaking book instead and do the exercises).

You prefer a life without options? Everyone eats spaghetti every day.

No, but I prefer having no options than some people abusing having options at the expense of others. "You have to eat spaghetti because I prefer something else"

Unfortunately, having options leads some people to abuse them.

yes, this already happened to me now more often: players abort games when they have black. (and some when they get white but want to train black)

yes, they will get a time out punishment if they do that too often, but that will not motivate people to train their repertoire with lichess anymore, but leave and go to chess.com

Also, in the challenge seek, you can see if someone wants to be white, you dont have to accept the challenge. Nobody forces you!

At least leave the option for casual. But.... Casual games are less often accepted (I dont want to play for no ratings, c'mon! Casusals get sometimes resigned on move 4 cause they dont cost rating points.)

There is a reason why all other chess sites offer the option to be white or black.

Recently there was a request to allow filtering public challenges to show only "random" color ones which I would found reasonable. (BtW, with recent enough browser, it can be achieved via custom CSS style.) This goes a bit too far, IMHO.

But then, I'm using this way to start a game only rarely, so I'm not really affected.

I canceled 3 games in a row. First game was, because I wanted to be white. 2nd game was, as I accidently did casual and aborted it (casuals should not count for this punishmen, btw), and 3rd game was my opponent had unstable rating (just 12 games played in rapid).

Sorry :(
We had to time you out for a while.

17 minutes remaining

Why?
We aim to provide a pleasant chess experience for everyone.
To that effect, we must ensure that all players follow good practice.
When a potential problem is detected, we display this message.

How to avoid this?
Play every game you start.
Try to win (or at least draw) every game you play.
Resign lost games (don't let the clock run down).
We apologize for the temporary inconvenience,
and wish you great games on lichess.org.
