I have learned that I am impatient, rigid in my thinking, easily frustrated and also learned that I suffer from tunnel vision in that I get so wrapped up in one idea I don't bother to check out alternate plans that may be hidden in the position on the chessboard.

In other words chess has held up a mirror to me displaying all my psychological blind spots.

The most important thing I've learned: Think first before making a move

I learned how to teach myself a technical subject, alone without help or teachers.
I learned that it is important to think about the thinking process when tackling hard problems.
I learned to try to 'reverse the order' of ideas when stuck.
I learned how to think, concentrate and focus for 4+ hours, which was very helpful on my PhD exams in math long ago.
likely much more....

The idea of the forced move. You would be amazed how often that comes up in life, and the ability to see it sooner rather than later is often critical.
