I play chess every day here in lichess. And I often check the historical statistics in the profile of my opponents. Allmost every day, I see that an opponent has a historic win streak of around 30 to 50 games. That means they have won 30-50 games in a row with no loss or draw in between. Is that normal, or does a win streak like that indicate that they have cheated ?
There are 2 sides of every coin.
First side: They may be strong and have greater potential than they expected and hence defeated many players at stretch.
Second side: Thry just got weak players and hence were able to win.

A winstreak of 30 is normal cuz I have 27 as my streak and that just means that they have been very lucky.

When I joined the site, in the first day or two, I went something like 25 wins, 17 losses, against people in the 1700s, 1800s. I even beat a 2000+ player.
The following days, I had something along the lines of 70 losses and barely a few wins. Dropped to 1300s from near 1800. For some reason everyone started playing chess, very low centipawn loss on everyone etc.
Im still recovering from that.
So yes, if someone can have so many losses, surely you can have so many wins.

Let's say the first 10 games are used to more or less put the player in the correct ranking. After that the chances of winning 20-40 games are less than (because draws not calculated in) 1 / (2 ^ 20) which is 1 in a million to 1 / (2 ^ 40) which is absurdly low.
So yes, they either sandbag or cheat and I would report them.

You can easily reach a big winstreak by playing in arenas, where you encounter players that are much lower rated than you. It is a simple trick to get a great winning streak.
To be more accurate: You join the arena later. Like let us say 10min after it started. Then you are at a low position and you will be paired with lower rated players until you reach the stronger players.
Correct, it is how I managed to reach with my other account 2670 blitzrating after a streak of 77 consecutive wins. You still need to be lucky now and then of course.

@pointlesswindows Carlsen's highest win streak is 43...
That's cause he's a big sandbagger, always playing people below him, like there is no one at his rating pff.

Absolutely standard for a higher rated player to beat a lower rated player 30 games in a row. Especially when the higher rated player is faster and can just flag after making a mistake.
