I dropped 15 uscf and 25 fide in my last tournament partly because I wasnt feeling as motivated. I dropped from 2090 uscf and 1970 fide btw. Sometimes while playing otb I ask myself why am I doing this. Whats the point of it all. To the strong players that play otb what keeps you motivated and feel motivation to lock in.

At this point I just feel like I need to get my rating up for college aps and to make myself proud of myself rather than the actual enjoyment.

Chess is like math. Some like it and would work at it without any need for ancillary benefit. Some see it as necessary drudgery, to accomplish something else, instead. Like making themselves more attractive to the very finest of the potential life partners.
I mean, who among us has not looked upon a handsome or beautiful person and said to ourselves "oh, if only he or she knew how to play chess...." ?
And some ... the few, the proud, the rather delusional -- see it simply as a golden opportunity to play the Hippopotamus.
Each Hippopotamus is a fresh spring of wonder and levity, when the opponent -- sometimes rightfully -- can look on and wonder if he's playing against somebody with head trauma, or who has never read a chess book preaching about the need for development.
But the Hippopotamus teaches us that development is not all it's cracked up to be, and neither are we. And that's okay. Because, to borrow from Stuart Smalley (or his writer), we're good enough; we're smart enough; and, doggonit, people like us!
