how long is an average chess game?

Depends on the time control or whether the game is a tournament game or a casual, Lichess game.

Hi!

Looking in the FAQ for time controls, https://lichess.org/faq#time-controls ,
it seems that a number 40 is used in the formula which Lichess uses to estimate the duration of a game:
(clock initial time in seconds) + 40 × (clock increment)

  1. (Hmm, to me that feels rather arbitrary, and should probably be better off rounded up to 42, but hey!)

Chess on!

There are near to infinite number of possible chess games to play. This is why we cannot find out how many moves are played on average in a chess game.

I looked at my own stats to see how many games were required to get past 3000 moves. In blitz there were 76 (3002) while rapid went up to 83 (3038). It seems the faster time controls encourage players to battle on longer in poor positions whereas quite a few rapid games featured early resignations.

The averages were 39.5 moves for blitz and 36.6 for rapid.

You can see your averages in the insights, split by various criteria, e.g. variant (time control), date, game result, color, opponent strength, ...

On classical FIDE tournaments average is about 40 moves. At least on games on public records i.e. mine wont be included. On weaker players it may go up - like kids - as they are less likely to resign and there can be 20 extra moves to mate. And not resigning is correct on those games as the other one may well not know how to mate with lone queen
