Avoid Provisional players when seeking in the lobby

I think the problem is mostly in classical, when most players don't play a lot of classical, and from time to time they play a game. Just don't want to play a classical game against a cheater, since most classical games take more time.

@mysterious_expert

You've produced room for an argument which states that your rating should be suspended until you've played a per capita amount of provisional accounts at your rating bracket.

If I cause people not to eat and argue that this is acceptable, then I should have an empty refrigerator.
If I cause pollution to the air that others have to breathe, then I should live in a house filled with noxious air.
If I cause people not to have a chance to earn a rating, then I should not have a rating.

This community has provided you the opportunity to earn a rating; you owe us that exact same respect in return.

SELFISH (adj)

1: concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others

2: arising from concern with one's own welfare or advantage in disregard of others

HYPOCRITICAL (adj)

1: characterized by hypocrisy; e.g. "He said that it was hypocritical to demand respect from students without respecting them in return."

PARASITE (noun)

par·a·site | \ ˈper-ə-ˌsīt , ˈpa-rə- \

Definition of parasite

1: a person who exploits the hospitality of the rich.

2: something that resembles a biological parasite in dependence on something else for existence or support without making a useful or adequate return; e.g., 'That city has become a parasite on the country.'

3: a person who lives at the expense of another

bloodsucker, free rider, freeloader, hanger-on, leech, moocher, sponge, sponger

i don't care for players who haven't played enough to show their game completion rate. i just don't want someone who just lets time run out. i figure i'll abort those... i don't feel like wasting my time. actually, i'm a provisional player, but i have a high game completion rate.............

#12, it was just an honest question from my side. You don't have to barge in with such a stupid comment. If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it.

He was just asking a simple question to avoid having to spend 30+ minutes against a cheater. At his rating, it is more likely that a cheater has a ? in Classical because of the less number of games played, so less chances to be reported.

RUDE (adj)

1: Offensively impolite or ill-mannered

@mysterious_expert As for my answer, if you’re worried, aborting is probably the best tool. I doubt you will play a ton of provisionals if you set the rating to +/- 200...Congrats on your marathon finish! :)

I thought that laatikko had a very good question that deserved an answer.
I didn't just answer his question, I proved the answer to his question.

If mysterious_expert didn't act selfishly, that definition wouldn't have been "rude". It would have been irrelevant.
If mysterious_expert didn't act with hypocrisy, that definition wouldn't have been "rude". It would have been irrelevant.
If mysterious_expert didn't behave like a parasite, that definition wouldn't have been "rude". It would have been irrelevant.

As for encouraging people to break rules when you said...

...you should be ashamed of yourself. I expect that garbage from a kid. Not from an "adult".

If the founders of this site behaved this way, Lichess would never have existed in the first place.

I said it before, I'll say it again:

I find it irritating that people treat Lichess.org as though it's a public urinal instead of a place that is worthy of honour, respect, homage, hard-work, dedication, integrity, dignity, and civility.

Aborting a few games isn’t breaking the rules — aborting endlessly is breaking the rules. I anticipate the OP’s aborting would keep his Game Completion Rate above 90-95% consistently. I would be much more ashamed for calling a kid a “parasite” or “bloodsucker” in a forum than telling someone to abort a few games once every few weeks.

And I agree that it’s irritating that people treat Lichess.org as a public urinal...those are the people who choose to use the engine in the first place, making our experiences here worse. That’s much worse than what the OP was questioning.

Have a nice day!

@Titus369

It's granted that OP was reacting to an action.

It's also granted that OP was proposing that it's acceptable to allow everyone else to deal with the issue, while he enjoys a provisional-free atmosphere.

OP should do his share of the work.

OP should agree that it's better that we all together spend only a few minutes vetting provisional accounts, instead of only a few people spending all of their time vetting provisional account.

You said: "Aborting a few games isn’t breaking the rules..."

Yes it is breaking the rules. What happens if we ALL misbehave in this way?
Nobody gets rated. That's what happens.

The ONLY reason that we get to say, "it's only now and again that we face a provisional account," is because of me and anyone like me. Me and mine are owed a "thank you", not ad hominem.

It's a conceited and complacent slap in the face to watch people say things that prove that me and mine are taken for granted, and then argue ad hominem when we speak up for ourselves.

If everyone misbehaves the way that OP suggests is acceptable, and how you, Titus, encourage is acceptable, then Lichess would break itself LITERALLY overnight. People would say, "I'm going to some second best site where they still have ratings."

Lastly, I want it on the record that I did not start a post railing about people that abort games against provisional accounts.
Someone piped up and I responded.

Given OP's age, he can claim "oblivious" and "dizzy" and "immaturity"; however, Titus, if you're over 18, then you have no excuse.

If anything, you should be playing good cop here and explaining what it is that people are reacting to.
Pointing out the problem with his action.
Pointing out why it's against the rules to abort games against provisional accounts.

Instead it's "here comes the ad hominem".
Instead it's "let's defend selfish and disruptive behaviour, and chastise those that take issue".

OP needs to look at the amount of time that me and mine spend doing our best to keep this site rubbish free.
OP needs to ask how he can help, not ask how he can add more to our plate.

**

OP certainly shouldn't be encouraged in his misbehaviour.
Me and mine certainly shouldn't be discouraged in our behaviour.

Not only wouldn't Lichess exist in the first place...but OP would find it unlivable if everyone misbehaved like him.
Either way, OP, and OP's supporters, need to apologize and digress.

Just copy paste the following, Titus, and consider my respect for you restored:

"On second thought, mysterious_expert, Onyx and lattikko are both making some very good points. I think that Onyx could have made his point a little more diplomatically, but who knows what kind of a helliday he might be in the middle of.

At the end of the day, what he's saying is exactly correct. If people like Onyx are willing to invest their time playing against the odd provisional account, in order to vet for cheaters or welcome new faces into the community, then it's only civil that you and me and everyone else help with that effort as well. It's good for Lichess, and it's what we should all be doing." - Titus369 (respect regained)
