The REAL value of chess pieces

Fascinating, seeing the board in a new way.

Fascinating, seeing the board in a new way.

What exactly does a value of a piece, let's say of 0.8, mean, how can I imagine that?

The position is evaluated 0.8 worse if the piece is not there?

Since it's not going to be exchanged in the position it's in, it's hard to imagine what this value actually means.

How do I input the command "/piecevalue"

This is poetic. A pieces value is really just it's worth in the current position, be it even negative. This article made me a better player and opened my eyes a bit, kudos.

WOW!
(sorry, it feels like i'll have a hard time to find proper wording for my impressions and thoughts)

Initially, i felt like: Such an absurd idea to derive static values from dynamically used bits, decomposing the structure of a chess position into willingly human set boundaries. Of course, that is, what generations of chess programmers did before the birth of alpha-zero.

As i see things, all those concepts like piece value, center control, king safety and many more are not telling the truth, but are like useful handrails for people learning to walk in the uncharted terrain, helpful at first, but hindrances later on.

Every advanced chess player will confirm, that one initially absorbs such "rules" and patterns, and experiences fun at applying them, only to find out later, that they turned into a burden somewhat and refining ones technique often is correlated to unlearning the stuff, that was helpful in the beginning.

Yet, this blog shows some original approach, there is a surprising (and slightly confusing) perspective, which entices the belief, the numbers showed were useful. I doubt that. But still, this work can help mitigate some false beliefs, which can prove to be very useful, if applied at the right time in the learning process. (too early = confusion)

So i thank you for this food for thought, although i would not recommend relying on any conclusion yet, even the exploration, i suggest you delay it until you became a stronger chess player.

Just my sincere opinion (my 2 cents)

very interesting . When will this be avaible on lichess tools?

Interesting stuff. Useful tool to use for verification when, during analysis, the phrase "X piece is very key to white's position right now" comes up.

It is available already. LiChess Tools is a browser extension you need to install.

Awesome stuff! I once tried doing this but from a different approach. I analyzed the starting position 30 times, each time with a single piece missing and then kept track of how much the evaluation changed for each piece. The valuation would move quite significantly different than you would imagine just by taking the values here from the starting position!
