FIDE suspends GM Christopher Yoo following new harassment allegation

In retrospect, my wording about the situation wasn’t precise. My intention was to highlight nuances, not to downplay physical violence. Of course, any physical assault must be taken seriously, and I support a thorough investigation. It seems my comparison with an online incident didn’t come across the way I had intended.
Of course, safety is important. My comment wasn’t meant to question that, but to express doubt about the proportionality of sanctions. I see now that this distinction should be pointed out.

Thank you for your clarification

Considering his record, a 60-day suspension seems appropriate.
The 60-day suspension is not meant as a punishment, it is a preliminary measure to keep the offender away from official OTB events until the case is handled and actual decision taken. Which is also why there is the note that this suspension can be extended if the investigation takes longer. Come on, even GM level players often don't play any tournament for 60 days.

I hope he gets his title revoked for a whole 2 years and is banned from playing chess OTB for 2 years.
IMHO the suspension will be longer. The first incident was punished by USCF by a 1 year suspension with 5 years of probation period. Even before this 1 year suspension (which sadly wasn't extended to FIDE events due to process issues) was over, he transgressed again and IMHO in an even worse way. Thus I believe a 2-year suspension would be an absolute minimum but it's IMHO quite likely the actual penalty should be much harder.

Why do you "express doubt" about the proportionality of the sanctions tho?

Actually, in the case of Latvian IM Andrejs Strebkovs, his IM title was revoked by FIDE after they found him guilty of the postal harassment of women and minors. His ban was extended to 12 years on appeal and cross-appeal.

Wow, did not know that! Thanks for letting me know.

I think it's really a shame.

While we don't know what led to Yoo's behavior reaching this stage, we can't excuse it.

Chess videographers, photographers, analysts, etc are all deserving of just as much respect as everyone else, and top players should be the apotheosis of proper etiquette and conduct. If top players set a bad example, novice players that view the top player as a role model will mirror this behavior.

My heart goes out to the women that had to experience this abusive behavior, and I hope they have access to the resources they need.

Like the kids in my class, they are immature. But alas, they know how to show propper behaviour. And really never fail doing this.
Beeing immature is simply no reason for this.

There is no excusion for this. He was told to change his behaviour, he did not comply. Now he faces the consequences. No reason to feel sorry him. Any reason to feel sorry with his victims. Oh, i forgot, victims are not important in those discussions.... my fault.
