Build starting from fundamentals. Then, play and build on those fundamentals as you get better. "Chess Fundamentals" by Jose Capablanca is a great place to start.

"The First Book of Morphy" is severely underrated as a book. First chess book I read cover to cover. I also recommend some Capablanca books, "Chess Fundamentals" and "My Chess Career," his classics.
