How To Catch a Cheater

So you are saying:-

it takes one to beat one,

If the engine is so good that a 2500 Strength guy can't beat, that most of the cheaters would lose to it too, because as far as I know about trend they never use the strongest and the best engine to cheat, they would rather have engines of weaker strength.

And other than that, no one comes to lichess to play vs a bot.

Other than that, within a few days time, all such accounts will be known. Because people will raise questions on them such as:-

  1. Why is its rating so low, if it is so good.
  2. Why is it not getting banned even after such a high accuracy it shows.

There might be many more problems, but all that which have been mentioned on the forum topic.

Clearly suggest that the idea is not so appealing.

You have to play with them. several times . I mean, when playing, you can know if the opponent is a cheater or not. Of course, more than one game may be needed. The point here is that a person is a chess player or a cheater. It cannot be both because cheating destroys a chess player.

I got this great idea. Put a few bots in the rated games, and no one knows who they are, and they are stockfish bots playing at 95% strength. Strong enough that only a cheater can beat them. If someone beats them, instaban.

So I don't lose against cheaters but "legal" bots? So where is the difference for me?

If someone beats them, instaban...Also, make sure the bots have book randomization at 100% so they are not identified by them playing the top computer opening line.

The methods Lichess have already explained they use are orders of magnitude, both more thorough and more precise than the method you describe. But the methods they have not shared are more numerous and potentially more sophisticated.

I agree with thinking of ways to prevent cheating, but the technology is vastly more advanced than most people claiming that they have discovered a cheater that the cheat detection has failed to recognise realise.

Why deploy Bots when you can pair suspect cheaters with other suspect cheaters and watch the results!

No idea if this is already done by LiChess, but clearly there would be a some rational behind such a practice.

I do wonder about this when I see posts complaining about cheaters, I have played 100+ games and only been suspicious about one game (instantly perfect opening play - still humanly possible however, but highly unusual). I have also played 1000+ games over on chessdotcom and found suspicious play to be very rare - although I have suspicions about some other things, hence no longer play humans on that site.

I also analyse all my games off-line and have never seen anything dodgy.

thinking about a program that silently visiting the user "task manager" in his PC & view + investigate the lists of on going programs..
but this won't be effective when a cheater uses two devices, one for playing & the other for cheating...

On modern operating systems, it is impossible to get the task list without someone entering an admin password.
Plus, it would be illegal in many countries.

Cheating has exploded in the last 60-90 days or so. I've been playing online for almost 25 years and it has always been there, but the recent increase in cheating at online chess is a sight to behold.
