I have felt that ChessBase has always been a little ethically challenged ever since their 2012 April Fools joke, where they claimed to have solved The Kings Gambit as a win for Black, but dated the announcement “April 2” instead of “April 1” to fool more people. That came off as dishonest to me and I sent them a letter saying that it goes against the April Fools convention to give it a different date than “April 1”.
I’m not surprised, in light of that dishonest “joke”, that they attempted to take GPL code and release a closed source fork of it (until they were caught), nor that they made dishonest claims that their proprietary NNUE network is significantly stronger than Stockfish (when, here, “Stockfish” is an older version).

we can just technically copy Fat Fritz 2 but I did not try as I thought it Fat fritz was good enough ( before I read this article ), Maybe we can still copy it it was a long time ago so I don't know it will work again

Why bother copying FF2? It's not as good as the free original anyway. :D
Actually, the more I think about it the more surprised I am that CB is seen as the market leader. For example, in 40 years they haven't been able to figure out how to add a game to another game at the last position they have in common. Sometimes you do a simple drag and drop of a game into a large game file and then spend five minutes looking for where in the notation it ended up.
A friend of mine claims the free SCID database doesn't have that problem - it can apparently even adjust for reaching the same position via different openings and even with extra moves thrown in!
Anyway, I found a youtube channel that shows how to use Chess Aquarium - have only watched one video so far, but for deeper analysis it seems a very interesting option, imo.

Did they actually think no-one would notice? Why not just credit the devs and release it anyway?

I find the article title a little misleading. Saying that something is a rip-off is implying an unfair price, while the text is really about plagiarism.

@banem82 How is 100€ (120$ US) a fair price for a clone of a free engine with a NN that makes it weaker?
