Off-topic section is becoming a liability.

Reddit, Facebook, X/Twitter are way even worse.

Lichess is a blessing in terms of moderation compared to the social networks I mentioned above.

society has always been like this.

but Lichess is a chess server/social network, which means that only people related to this game will use this site. which already makes for a very limited, even elitist audience, not because chess is an elitist game and hard to learn, but because of the erroneous image of our game in the popular imagination and in pop culture.

we are therefore preserved, like rare birds.

so if you want to seek for others things than those from the Off topic Lichess forum, take a 10-day cure on Reddit

Yup, we’ll said.

true enough about Reddit, but you have completely missed the mark on Facebook. Sure there is a lot of crap on Facebook, but it is very easy to ignore. If you don't like one Chess group, then don't join it. Find yourself one that you like, or create your own group where you are the boss

Would the Mastodon solution you propose be operated by lichess in any way, or would it essentially be an independent forum with its own moderation?

I don't know. I keep offering ideas to the team, hoping someday to imagine something popular enough that it might happen.

absolutely correct, not to mention those anon forums that teem with a multiplicity of abusive/grungy/nasty dictions in threads at large .
Take a stroll there and I'm pretty sure you'll find lichess' off-topic section definitely an almost impeccable place where conversations are held with moderations.
If you find it hard to negotiate challenging replies/annoying threads here ,the odds of being offended/despondent would be pretty high when you meet someone with a propensity of intrusive words/actions elsewhere online/offline.
