I just think that most of the conflict comes from the Tournaments. It just is because the chat is live and has a higher risk of cyberbullying to happen, even though I made very good friends from those.

Almost all of my games are in tournaments, and I rarely (if ever) see cyberbullying go unmuted for long periods. I believe some of that may have to do with a better report functionality and active mods.

Are you playing in private tournaments? If so, that might be your problem.

I play in public, I would say something closer to minor conflicts, such as swearing, and small arguments. Other than that, not nothing much.

I know what you mean.

I personally have been in plenty of those conflicts.

On my former main account @Gedaliah I used to call myself a HUM (Hated Unofficial Moderator), I was stupid ok?, and I would enter the chat room to make sure there was no swearing, insulting or spamming.

As a result I have been the recipient of “Fuck You!”-s, “Stfu”-s and plenty other hatred... simply because I tried to warn people not to spam or disrespect other users. Most of the people were helped by my actions, they sometimes told me they didn’t know and thanksed me for letting them know. But some were as I have already listed in the category of disrespectful trolls.

I have also been in heated debates in the chat rooms because I tried to tell “Politically-inclined supporters” to talk politics elsewhere and not in tournament chat room. They often used the “free-speech card” on me but I would retort with the “This is a chess tournament chat room”... anyway...

What I am trying to say is that I agree with your post, I myself have witnessed it firsthand, even been on the receiving end multiple times... and yes the live chats can be a source of this controversy... but that does not mean we should get rid of them.

Humanity as a race will always have some bad eggs in the carton. Are we going to get rid of the entire carton because of some bad eggs? That would be unfair for the good eggs. It’s how the bad eggs are treated.

We must change the minds of those bullies or at least deal with them better than they are currently dealt with. We should politely try to warn them (as I have tried) and if they don’t listen then they must receive their dues.

Swearing by itself isn't a huge deal, and mods don't treat it as such unless they deem that it's being used with offensive intent (ex, saying "I fucked up" after playing a mistake is less problematic than saying "fuck you". Small arguments are a fact of life, but mods usually deal with them quickly and effectively.

Moderation of tournaments is not a major problem on this site, so far as I have seen. Moderation of FORUMS, though, is a total shitshow.

I think this thread has gone a little sideways. I am in no way advocating for getting rid of chat rooms. This is solely about https://lichess.org/forum/off-topic-discussion

I am also not advocating removing the subforum as a punishment-- I have used that subforum more than anyone. I am advocating the removal of the subforum because it is being mishandled, causing a strain on the organization's resources, and invites more problems than it's worth.

Personally at this point I wish Lichess would impose a restriction that any political garbage that is attempted to be created in the forums results in immediate 1 month chat&forum ban.

Of course this is rich coming from a guy with a restricted account who was caught by Lichess for making multiple accounts and giving most of them to other users who couldn’t create accounts for themselves.

Meh, I probably should stop talking in these forums. Everyone points my violation out when I try to correct someone about something.

@Zenith-Cruiser157
I don't think your past infractions are relevant in this case if you're trying to be productive.

Politics is a dicey thing. I get that people are wanting to zero in on them as a source of arguments and bad feelings, but it's also difficult to determine when something becomes "politics". Additionally, you can get some very interesting conversations when people who disagree on policy, but both know what they're talking about, discuss politics.

Perhaps that is especially not worth the risk (after all, it can be difficult to differentiate honest discussion with dishonest discussion in one of those threads), but I don't even know if we can be that focused at the moment.

@clousems, I appreciate your reply. I also understand your comments. It is a problem. The sad thing is there are many threads that I follow where I find good true socialising and friendship building... but the amount of political stuff in there creates so many controversies that attract trolls and then the pain and war spreads to corrupt the other good conversations... it’s disheartening at times. I sometimes check the forum page and am saddened when I see 10/12 of the first 12 forum topics are political or argumentative.

They downvote almost every single post, however unrelated to the original topic they disagreed with you on, for the next couple weeks after you say anything. Which I think counts beyond trolling to go into harassment. So it's not even just about not engaging since even not responding to things will still get you attacked. And of course, I would love to be a bigger person - but when attacked repeatedly for simply existing on the wrong side of things...well, I have a short temper.
You just have to see each of his downvotes as as many badges of honour. After all, being hated by a moron is a rather good sign, isn't it?

Personally I think what these forums need is more impaling. As my great-great-great-grandfather said, just impale them all and they'll keep quiet.
