I happen to know the troll referenced here. It's not just a matter of engaging or not. They downvote almost every single post, however unrelated to the original topic they disagreed with you on, for the next couple weeks after you say anything. Which I think counts beyond trolling to go into harassment. So it's not even just about not engaging since even not responding to things will still get you attacked. And of course, I would love to be a bigger person - but when attacked repeatedly for simply existing on the wrong side of things...well, I have a short temper.
And I don't think this is about bad parenting. Parents can't control the influx of trolls, nor can they control it when said trolls attack for almost no reason.

I have dealt with the same troll and tried to engage with them in a civil manner. But it quickly became apparent that they are not capable of civil discourse (or unwilling). So i explained to them that our discussion was over and blocked them. Of course, many of my posts were then downvoted by the troll. I'm sorry, but this is not an 'attack' or 'harassment'. It's a troll trying to get a reaction, and is easily ignored. Only you can try and address the issue of your 'temper' ;).
Kid mode exists for parents and this solves all the problems of trolls and minors seeing adult material. Parents that dont use kid mode are accepting that their child will be exposed to adult content and exposed to potentially dangerous individuals.

Disagreements about what consitutes a fascist movement are not trolling. Posting visual evidence on this topic is neither.
I'm not sure why you guys are mixing political disagreements and harassment here, the two are very different and should be clearly differentiated. Nobody is forcing you to discuss the rise of fascism, you can just not participate in those threads.
Harassment on the other hand is usually directed and unavoidable and should be taken very seriously. Please don't confuse these issues.

I never claimed they were so not sure what you are referring to.
I also have no issue with political disagreements. Infact, i enjoy them. I dont engage with the New Puritans tho and Ive never claimed harassment.
I find most people on here are arguing with an imagined enemy and usually misrepresent the other side.

Get over yourselves chill out and realize , how you react to things is in your own hands. Love is the answer . Peace and love to all . No need to get your knickers in a twist. Have a drink have a smoke or meditate whatever gets you through and stop blaming moderators, who, are giving up their free time to help the website that they obviously love to the bottom of their hearts , ......get over youselves , go for a walk , breathe in the fresh air and look at the big picture xxx

Please focus on the topic at hand— whether the off topic section is a liability

It's really not. Moderation quality has been going downhill for a while now, and lichess has made it clear that moderating the off-topic section is not a priority.
Elimination of the off-topic section gets discussed from time to time, and I think the total lack of effort mods apply there is an important concern to safety issues.
Yes, I am indeed pissed about being called a child abuser, but I'm also not going to advocate for the removal of site features just because someone called me mean things once or many times. The reason I included it is that it is a perfect example of lack of moderation effort.
I have supported and defended mods quite often in the past, but I don't blindly support people who don't do their jobs effectively, even if they are well intentioned.

The problem is that the behavior goes beyond vehemently expressed political, ideological, or religious opinion.
See post #1
but it results in what I have spoken of. The behavior became violent when the thread is arguable pr itlself mentionning violence
so, if I could have proposed something, it would have been to systematically ban political, religious or ideological threads. a kind of secularism, you keep your political opinions or your religion for private, not for the forum because the chances that a subject on Israel-Palestine, Russia-Ukraine, Congo-Rwanda, Trump, or Left-Right will end up getting out of control are high.
The fact is also that mature users post links talking about these conflicts and potentially their atrocities, which can represent a risk for younger or more sensitive users.
Same for topics dealing with violent or overly mature things, I wonder if the thread on Tarantino or my own thread on Jurassic Park where I mentioned the original book, are suitable for the Lichess forum, especially in the case of mentions, quotes or even posting scenes from films. for this case, another idea instead of banning: we should perhaps do like on Reddit or other social networks, put a mature content badge (concerning all types of subjects: Tarantino, Jurassic Park, WW2, geopolitics) and that only users over 15 or 16 years old can see and post on it
