Your favorite games during Agadmator's CakeDeFi Christmas Arena that crashed Lichess server

I guess this tournament will go down in infamy for crashing the Lichess servers. It was organized by Agadmator, the famous Croatian Youtube streamer with the generous support of the Lichess team and prizes were furnished by Cake Defi in the form of bitcoins. All the big names participated including Magnus Carlsen, Alireza Firouzja, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Hikaru Nakamura who (for the 1st time) opened a Lichess account and played the minimum 50 bullet games in order to participate. This tournament was open meaning anyone could join. It was an amazing opportunity to play in the same tournament and possibly even go up against some of the strongest chess players in the world. In all there were 19048 participants. After a few minutes there was a 1st crash.

Lichess restarted the tournament successfully:

Apparently Magnus did not participate in this 2nd start. The 2nd run of the tournament stopped allowing new pairings after ~1hr because the servers were overloaded. Doubtless the Lichess team will look into things and make improvements for the next time. They announced that they may continue the tournament at a later date with the current standings (and a more restrictive rating threshhold for participation).

Anyway, I know there were some exciting and funny games during this event and I thought it would be cool if we could share our favorite games (or even streams of them) here. I heard for example that IMs and Chess Streamers Levy Rozman and Mark Rosen went up against eachother to hilarious effect. Ofcourse there were some cool games between the top seeds, but you might have had a funny game you want to share here too.

I had a very funny final game against a player with 1000 rating points more than me here:

Here is the game that crashed the tournament: GM Daniil Dubov vs. IM Levy Rozman. The game actually did not count towards the tournament due to the crash:

and in Levy's own words:

Famous last words: "Oh, how kind of you <after opponent blunders a piece> and can you please resign as well?"

Hikaru's got that pog face though, and Levy... idk if his game was the last one that Lichess could handle (or first that it couldn't) since I wasn't there to see. Maybe that was just a game and Lichess had already crashed right before the game ended or something

The Levy/Daniil game was started by the tournament pairing system, but the tournament crashed before it completed. Therefore it wasn't scored as part of the tournament. This is normal behaviour on Lichess. When a tournament ends, any games that are still in progress don't get included in the tournament points.

Here is the controversial game between Magnus Carlsen and Daniel Naroditsky:

https://lichess.org/w1j9cz4v#0

It's controversial because David Howell can be heard telling Magnus that he can trap Daniel's queen in Magnus' stream of the game:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqNUdi0uCss

and here's Daniel's response to the question "Are you salty about Magnus cheating?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBzWo732BiM

What do you all think? Daniel say's its hard not to say something when you see a move like that on the board and so he can understand Howell's statement. Personally i think when there's money on the line like this and its documented that Magnus got help, the winner should request that the game is scored as a draw at the very least.

I would tape off the backbench gamers and put a hole in it so that they can still drink

Magnus still needs help nowadays?

I doubt it, but he definitely got it in this game.
Anyway its a tempest in a teapot and could hardly affect the standings.

There was another nice post by NM Chess-Network reviewing some of Magnus games with strong opponents in the tournament. It poses a question of how each player could have played better on a certain move.

Agad and Lichess announced the continuation of the tournament would occur Jan. 11, 2022.

it is mentioned in this Lichess blog entry:

https://lichess.org/blog/YdtgfhEAACIAO-s_/bortnyk-wins-the-titled-arena-and-the-agadmator-arena-is-ready-to-resume

Unfortunately they had to limit it to players with rating >2000 in order to avoid server issues.
Hopefully Lichess will find a way to organize larger open tournaments without running into technical issues in the future. A lot of us really appreciate the idea of an open tournament where players of all abilities up to an including the top chess players participate.

here is the link to the tournament:
