How should one draw a chess position on paper?
Sometimes I have to go away from the computer, and I want to think about the position for a bit.

Draw 8x8 grid and write letters where the pieces are, for example WK (white king) on b3, BN (black knight) on f4 and so on.

Alternatively, use upper case letters for white pieces and lower case letters for black pieces. This can be harder to achieve depending on handwriting.

Hey @StevenEmily that is a great idea!
The grid is common sense, but you dont need to make the dark squares only if you want to. For my own pawns I draw thick points|circles and for my opponent pawns I use empty circles or Xs or another symbol. Sometimes I also you Xses to mark the squares my pawns have control over.
For knights you can either draw a horsey or write an N. Rooks can be drawn very easy and queens and kings too. Bishops can be drawn or written with B. Do it a way you like it! There is no need to write the color of the piece! (what nonsense @pointlesswindows and even @biscuitfiend :D) all you need are two pencils with different colors or make the black ones thicker or your own.
Have fun!

@chessypiano You're right, of course. Our solutions are rather pedestrian compared to yours. :)

Get a portable set if you can afford it, although it's easy to lose the pieces...

I bought a set of chess piece and board stamps. There is something good about taking the time to make a clear position with them in the notebook I use to keep track of chess ideas. It's not as time efficient as just printing the position, but the extra time also makes it easier to recall.
