Everythingβs important. You have to improve your overall level. Focussing solely on openings is as wrong as playing them just by principle.
In fact, knowing your openings well including the ensuing plans for the middlegame, where the pieces belong to in this particular line, is the key to success.

Maybe starting at the end will help. I'm going through a three month preparation for next season's league matches in England and I've chosen to play rapid on here for a month and then focus on longer games for the following two months, sharpening with blitz right at the end. I will also focus on endgames and tactics for the three months. The commitment works out at about two hours a day. Ok for a hobby I think.
