All calculation, it seems to me, involves mental pictures. Whether it's you adding numbers in your head (123+55) or the Cheetah calculating which angle to take to catch the Impala,, or if I take his pawn, he takes my knight, etc. All done in pictures.
From mirriam webster dictionary:
calculation
noun
cal·cu·la·tion ˌkal-kyə-ˈlā-shən
Synonyms of calculation
1
a: the process or an act of calculating
b the result of an act of calculating
2
a: studied care in analyzing or planning
b: cold heartless planning to promote self-interest
Both uses are common in language. So not chess only usage
It is calculation in the literal sense. You mentally come up with a move sequence but at the end you need to assess the position. An engine will do this mathematically and give you a number and many humans will do the same and say 'I'm+1' or whatever. And even if you don't do it numerically, you'll say 'I'm equal' or 'I'm slightly better' which is a calculation.

I am curious what you think "calculation" means outside of chess. To me, it seems like it's the exact same thing (although not specifically with chess pieces, of course).

Addition , subtraction, multiplication, division, integration, differentiation,
Would you prefer to call it
''decision-tree-ing'' ??
I prefer simply ''calculating'' for the ''IF... THEN.. ELSE..'' that we do in chess analysis.

That is calculation in the context of mathematics, but there are things other than chess and math. "Not chess" does not mean "math." Besides, these are still the same concept are they not? It's just that one is in the context of chess and the other is in the context of math.

Science , economics, statistics...
For reference, go-players call it 'reading'.
