Why is thinking moves ahead called "calculating" in chess ?

you also calculate risks
or possible outcomes, odds.

it has a wider notion than calculating numbers or algorithms, variables in maths.

'take into account' is related,
'do a take down' (as cashier or in life), ...

language is dynamic. you see that everywhere how words change.

For reference, go-players call it 'reading'.
Sometimes I hear people use to calculate. In go there is important calculation to be done. At once in a while one has to calculate amount of territory expected hence to diffentiate the two actions "reading" is used. Which is direct translation of Japanese word (Yomu).

Calculation is used in many areas for descriping planning. Not just in chess. In particular person can be described as "cold calculation" to describe selfish, cynical action to benefit of situation at the cost of other. Very much the same as in chess.
