We were taught that it is important to, a) control the centre, and b) develop pieces in the opening.
1e4 places a pawn in centre and allows development of bishop and queen, and so looks like an excellent logical move. Many of us were taught this move when we first started playing chess.

The only drawback of 1.e4 is that it is instantly targetted as a potential weakness.

e4 is the best move.
When I started playing chess, I used to play e4 as a instictive move (open bishop's diagonals, control the center; can support a possible d4 later in the game...). Then I switched to 1.d4 and 1.c4 but it did not work that well. So I went back to 1.e4 and enjoy playing against the sicilian, the CK, the french...

Playing e4 nowadays yields me nothing. No advantage, no fun, no subtleties, no success.

Sicilian is better for black than Dutch. Queen's Gambit is better for white than King's Gambit.
That however proves nothing.

@Sarg0n how about 1. e3, one move delayed success strategy.

Whatever your first move is , as long as it has purpose and its logical, it can't be wrong.

that is why you don't play the van't-krujs opening. It blocks your black bishop, and doesn't really control the center. I used to be obssessed with it though, because 2 d4 but c3 also does that and Nd4 is always an option after that

a follow up, the Zukertort opening controls more of the center than e4 or c4, but d4 works too. Does anybody know what 1 e4 Nc3 is called?

@Avocado-love 1. e4 Nc3 is Nimzowitsch defence.
