Hello!
It is because sometimes chess can relieve my stress(even chess is more stress!)
Something about seeing a winning move or a combination several moves deep and it plays out exactly like you wanted gives a nice dopamine boost.
was an escape for me as a child from a rough childhood. It's been a warm-fuzzy nostalgia memory and one of the few constants in my life. I'm not great at it, but above average.
I'm not even a huge fan of playing the game, just a fan of it regardless. Love replaying games, following players, and the Karpov vs Kasparov matches were so awesome and huge I wish we could have that again, but with lichess and the current state of chess there is no shortage of master-level games to watch, lichess tv is wonderful!
I get joy from mostly esports of it now, love the stuff @Chess-Network produces, for example.
I may never get out of class A strength, and that's fine. There's always a bigger fish and need to just be OK with it. I see chess as a solo game I play with others, but mostly I just do my own thing.
I have started to take chess seriously again for the first time in many many years, so kinda stoked about that. I live near St Louis but unlikely to play in quads or any tournaments IRL again.
Edit: I used to be obsessed with openings, but now it is mostly endgames and proper execution of plans and playing within structures well. Getting to love the comfort of getting where calculation is the home base, so everything else is sorta easier and not scary after it. It's a concrete game, which my autism brain likes, even if it is scary to play with others, heh.
I like chess because it is a game of strategy and tactics. One doesn't need to worry about having "bad luck" or bad die rolls. When I was a kid, I played lots of games which were based more on luck than on strategy. I'm not great at chess...I wouldn't even say I'm good. The game seems fair to me. If you are playing with a friend, you can always play an even number of games, with both players playing white or black the same number of times. It might take a while, if you are evenly matched, to determine a winner. However, there are plenty of ways to blunder in chess, so you might not need very many games. Another reason I like chess is one has a lot of options. I'm not stuck with 12 identical pieces, such as in Checkers (I like Checkers, by the way, but it's not as fun for me as chess).
I love chess because there are so many possibilites and it also is so creative and fun (a.k.a the best game EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
