if you didn't have chess in your life - another dimension where it doesn't exist - what would you replace it with? Fortnite? Counter Strike 2? Perhaps bowling or gardening or a slavish addiction to poetry readings?

I like chess because it makes me think and concentrate. Every game is different, and there's always something new to learn. I like planning my moves and trying to guess what my opponent will do. Plus, it makes me feel good when I manage to win using my strategy. It's a game that helps me develop patience and improve my memory while I have fun.

The only legal way to torture people :-)

Seriously, however, I have no idea. I got hooked when I was a kid. You might as well ask someone who started smoking when they were 12 why they like it...

it's cool to think there are millions of folks out there with warm fuzzy memories of chess and childhood. other kids out there fascinated by whatever players/champs and learning openings and tactics and just so much (Karpov vs Kasparov was big for me) and have it a firm part of who they are is just so awesome :)

For me too. Karpov vs Kasparov was the first WCC confrontation I followed (was too young for Karpov vs Korchnoi).
