In this game I just played I had a -71.7 evaluation, and I don't remember seeing one that high before. What is the cap? Perhaps a hundred? Is there a cap? Of course I'm excluding mate in X moves.

A position can only be won or it's equal. Resp. 0 or any number is legit.

99 if it exceeds 100 its mate in x moves

Btw, ELO5287: "I don't remember seeing one that high before."

I'm not asking a philosophical question about what is "legit", which would be your opinion anyway. I'm asking a practical question what is the highest number for an evaluation that stockfish will disiplay.

Elo 5287!?
Btw, every program and even different versions have different caps. So you are asking for this particular version used in lichess?

Further question: illegal positions included?

Good questions. Yes, the normal version that comes with the lichess analysis board.
And it would be interesting to see first for legal positions, but then if you had one with like 20 queens that was even higher that would be interesting too. The other commenter suggested it's 100 , so perhaps 20 queens gets you a fraction of an evaluation point closer than with 9 queens? Assuming 9 queens makes a difference.

WOWWWWWWWWW they finally let you put illegal positions into the analysis board it seems! When did that happen? I've been wanting that for so long. I have a lot of things to try now lol.
And yea i guess 99 being so close to 100 makes it seem like 100 is the ceiling. I guess a fun challenge might be to see how close you can actually get it. 99? 99.1? 99.2? Thanks for the response.
