What is a camper in chess?

I beat a higher rated guy than me just now and he said I was a "fcking camper". I did a quick google search, but mostly what I came up with were chess camps ;)

So what exactly is a camper and why is it bad?

BTW my first post here and I've only been playing for like a week or something. Still have a lot to figure out ;)

But if that player make bad comments about you in the chat, you can report them to moderators.

I guess you're defending too much for him, though having the link of the game would help.

But anyway, you shouldn't listen to him, as there's no such thing as a "chess camper", playing defensively is a fine strategy.

A term given to those in an online multiplayer game (usually FPS) who will place themselves in a strategic position and wait for an extended period of time until a target enters his field of view. The position usually allows one to surprise the target and allows the "camper" to eliminate him with ease. Camping is a perfectly legitimate strategy, but is criticized by a majority of the online community, usually because players get frustrated by being killed in such a fashion, it slows the game down and is considered an unskilful art. Idiots always resort to insulting a camper, who will most likely have a higher score than them. Incompetent admins sometimes kick them and the camper society becomes one of ridicule and resentment.

It isn’t illegal to position yourself in such a way that you have an advantage, that’s smart thinking and its part of the game. Some people need to grow some balls.

I think a camper is someone who does fianchetto but I only heard that term once, in chess,
Its more for counterstrike or other type of games,
They did play different in times of Morphy like It was a gentleman thing to accept a gambit but nowadays fianchetto and hypermodern is perfectly legit,
for example the reti opening nf3
but It does not make much sense in chess though to talk about camping.
In counterstike when you get the 4 6 gun, the awp and people go with AK47 or M4A1 then It does change a lot the nature of the game.
