Classical is a good format to learn in. I approve + we need more classical players out there. I need to play more of it myself: if not classical, correspondence is also good as you can devote a lot of time to an individual move, also a great way to really learn specific openings.
And puzzles.

I think the best variant is bullet but rapid and blitz is good as well but don't do classical you will lose allot. The best way to improve in my opinion is to do puzzles and play the computer 1-8
You should also learn more openings, middle game, and endgame.
If you play bullet try to move good (not the best) But try to use a little time to do so.
If you are playing blitz try to find some good moves (at least good a little)
if you learn allot of openings it makes it easier in low time controls (Blitz & Bullet)
In rapid you should take more time (Not to much or you will lose on time)
In this case tactics will be easier to find
I do not recommend but in classical is the same as rapid but don't worry on time

@kathhhh wow what terrible advice.
Classical 30+0 is great. You could also try 15+10 rapid, where games generally last between 20-25 minutes, so a bit faster than classical. Correspondence chess is also good, but it is easy to lose sight of the plan/tactics as it is not played in a single go, and harder to learn from as you lose key information when you analyse the game after it's over. Also probably best not to use the opening explorer in correspondence as you don't think for yourself.

that's what you think

Play with increment so as not to develop a habit of trying to flag your opponent every game.

Play with the time control which is fun for you. Playing to try an improve, you should play a long(er) time control so that there's thought involved. Still, playing without understanding the mistakes you're making isn't going to help improve, so fun once again becomes more important.

@kathhhh your comment is close to be a parody of chess advice
"bullet for improvement"
"learning more openings"
"classical is the same as rapid"
actually the complete opposite is true

Rapid one, beacuse when you reach in classical chess more than 2000 rating, you will not get a lot of strong opponents anymore.
