Was the lichess rating system changed?

I had heard that the rating system on lichess was changed/tweaked. Is that true and if so, how will it affect our ratings and ratings for new players?

Pretty big, deviation is literally 600 now on new accounts

Any change to rating protocol is applied to all players, not just new players.

Unless you already have played in every game/variant/timecontrol.

RD can also revert to higher levels if users don't play for a period of time.

Either way, a high RD just means that players are able to establish their rating more quickly. Once someone has played a lot, the RD will drop and their rating will stabilize and become more accurate.

to me it wasn't really fair for him to be banned, he wasn't banned for cheating, but for increasing and decreasing which he didn't do, he simply played high rated players like 2500 and 2900 cause h couldn't find higher rated players.

@Komokid How about if you cite an example of someone who isn't cheating? That might help your case.

If a very strong player with no prior online rating decides to join a pool of players and the RD is low, the strong player gains relatively few points per game, achieving his actual rating at the expense of many lower rated players.

On the other hand, if the same strong player joins a pool with a high RD, the strong player will quickly rise to their actual rating level without stealing points from countless weaker players. The discrepancy of provisional rating inflation of new players is quickly calibrated and relatively short-lived. All things considered, the high RD approach seems more fair to more people over time.

The Glicko-2 system used by Lichess was originally created as an improvement of the Elo system. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glicko_rating_system

Admittedly, one drawback is that Lichess users can't stream speedruns to 3000 while playing the bongcloud against hundreds of lower rated players. Oh well.
