Do you mean Fischer/960 chess?

Do you mean Fischer/960 chess?

It's called Chess960 on Lichess.

The term freestyle chess was introduced in the early 2000s and had nothing to do with the Fischer random. It basically meant that players had time to consult external help during the event, including the help from the chess engines.

As for Fischer random, I think in the early 2010s it was basically re-branded to Chess960. The confusion about the name, like was it Fischer random, Fischer-random, Fischerrandom? Some wanted a different, general name to make it easier to popularize the game. Some hated Fischer.

Then various organizers tried to re-brand it again to different names. Like Chess 9LX by Saint Louis Chess Club and now Freestyle chess by Buettner's organization. Possibly because Chess960 couldn't be trademarked or for whatever reasons.

It's still Fischer random or as we now call it Chess960.

In my humble opinion, 960/Freestyle just doesn't hold water as a quick fix for the rough shape that classic chess is in. Adding a bit more flair without straying too far from the good old basics sounds totally doable.

The name Chess960 is older than from 2010. It was used in Chess Classic Mainz, which ended in 2010 and took place in many preceding years. More can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_Classic

@ILikeBlitz

What's your take, do you reckon the Koth format could be around as a viable option to OTB alongside 960 - do you see it as a real possibility or just wishful thinking ?
