Using pen and paper

@Sarg0n yeah, no, I was thinking of keeping track of decision trees and future move outcomes, not just recording the moves played (Lichess records that for me). Obviously not during ultrabullet, but on things like Classical or Correspondence.

Using Stockfish is cheating, surely, even in puzzles..?

Going deeply into myself. Thinking. Brooding! Doubting!! ... But now – without further ado – I would like to confide to you, dear notebook: I should, in good spirits, give more of my wise, sometimes scattered , but always benevolent attention to the omnipresent chess clock, which relentlessly counts the fleeting seconds ...

I remember one of Wesley So's games played in the 9th round of the US championship 2015.
Wesley was disqualified because he wrote some simple notes "Double Check and triple check" and "use your time." on his score sheet.

#11 Technically, it would be considered cheating if you want to do this during a game as per Lichess TOS: "Cheating. We define this as using any external assistance to strengthen your knowledge and, or, calculation ability to gain an unfair advantage over your opponent." (https://lichess.org/terms-of-service).

"[K]eeping track [using pen and paper] of decision trees and future move outcomes" is basically using external assistance to strengthen your calculation ability, so it would not be allowed in a game, not even correspondence, because in correspondence chess only "an opening book is allowed" (https://lichess.org/faq#correspondence), although it might make sense to allow the use of pen and paper in correspondence, it is not allowed as far as I understand.

For puzzles it would be OK or even advisable, I guess, although at some point you would need to learn doing this in your head.

@MrBarnesMoustache, hm... Why is there an option on Lichess to type notes then?
Hm.........

#17 Have fun drawing a decision tree in the notes. And I hope you understand the definition of external, because if pen and paper were allowed, I would also be allowed to set up the position on an actual chessboard and try the moves out there, before playing a move on Lichess. According to your rationale, that wouldn't be a problem, since Lichess allows you to draw arrows during the game? 🤔

@uukgoblin
If you would use the notes to make decision trees, in OTB that would count as a form of assistance that is not allowed.
You can see it as an unfair form of visualisation

-edit-
And apparently also lichess as mentioned by #16
