I know an IM from India, Divya Deshmukh. She has risen and proved herself in the Budapest chess olympiad.

Tip of the hat to Judit Polgar and Pia Cramling, who played only chess, not women's chess

As already pointed out in most of the comments. The most famous female chess players are clearly" The Polgar sisters" (Judit, Susan and Sofia). They have dominated Chess for decades and are still to this day regarded as some of the strongest chess players the world has ever seen. In particular Judit (who by the way beat Magnus Carlson in 2022) and Susan both where Woman's World Champions for several years. Judit is still to this day considered to be the strongest female chess player of all time! To those who say Pia Cramling, well I am myself a big Pia Cramling fan! She still is a very strong female chess player and has been the absolute female world number 2 in her prime! She has however never been as good as Judit Polgar nor as famous.

Judit Polgar was most definitely never women's champion of any kind.

Judit Polgár never acquired the Women World Chess Champion title. It's very likely she would be able to win it in the 90s but AFAIK she decided not to participate in the championship system. Susan Polgár was the champion from 1996 to 1999.

AFAIK, Judit never played any kind of women's chess, never mind just the championship cycle.
I'd be surprised if any woman besides Judit Polgar ever cracked the top 50, except possibly Yifan. Susan did a great job of promoting chess, though.

According to wikipedia, Hou Yifan's top ranking was 55 (May 2015) but Maia Chiburdanidze was ranked 48 (January 1988). We can only guess how high would Věra Menčíková get if there was a rigorous rating and ranking system in her era.
