The Method in Chess by Iossif Dorman

To the OP, I generally agree with you that books which are just endless model games are not very useful to read line by line, unless they are laser focused on specific openings or motifs. It's just a weakness of the medium that you can't really get around when you want to look at complex positions, because each position will always create a lot of pecularities, eccentricities that -need- to be addressed to justify some of their ideas. These usually end up being distractions; so to make these game analyses more useful, you may need to satisfy yourself with ignoring or just grazing these tangential passages - which can sometimes be pages long, admittedly - and keep yourself focused on what you're there to learn, even if the author fails to do so.

So, no matter what, a book by a guy like this is useful. You just might have to use his book a little differently than you would read a textbook in math or physics, understanding each thing fully in the order they are presented.

@afluffydog
That's probably true. I will go back to the book. But the problem really is that Dorfman has little explanation in the practical part of his book. That makes it difficult to read the book. He does not explain how he comes to his assessments/evaluations based on the 4 elements. That really bothers me about this book. But I will buy the Chess24 course. The two preview clips are good.

Вы написали почти то же самое, что и @afluffydog.
Так что посмотрите мой ответ ему!

But it would still be good if someone who uses the method would show annotated games that highlight the method!

Dorfmans method is a tool for decision making and the success implementing it depends on the experience of the player using it.
Its like an internal algorithm using the 4 elements.

  1. There is a priority order with King safety given the most importance.
  2. Next comes Material correlation and this can be tricky to evaluate because a rook = 5 is not always the truth, it depends on activity, coordination and similar factors.
  3. Which side will stand better after a potential trade of queens. Gazing into a future endgame. I think few players use this on a regular basis.
  4. Pawn structure.

A stronger player knows how to use this " Algorithm" in a flexible way, sometimes even changing the priority order to fit the position being evaluated. Its also important to understand what Dorfmans intention is by describing the elements as static.
Lets say your king is in the center and the center is opening up but you can make a narrow escape just in time by prepairing a castle, if he follows Dorfmans rule and start looking for Dynamic play in a situation where he might be better would be a mistake, also misevaluating pawn structures only looking at the current situation but not regarding possible future changes.
A static element means it can not be changed only if this box is checked can the Algorithm be implemented in a correct way and even then with so many moving parts there is complexity in deriving the correct conclusions. I use it as a framework for decision making, finding my candidate moves and then checking them against Dorfmans method makes me save time and quickly disregarding candidate moves that go against the basic principals of this method. Its useful for classical over the board games and depending on how good you assimilate this method and make it your second nature you might even implement it in blitz when the time is right. Dude, I know that stuff! @Pawnstructures Did you forget? I HAVE the book!

The purpose of this thread is to learn how other players use the method in their games and what experiences they have had with it! @Pawnstructures

Just highlighting some dangers in using the method in a rigid way, also there might be others in this thread considering buying the book that might find these insights helpful, or others who already bought the book but have problems implementing the method in practical play.
Regards Richard
