It is possible to play your way from an established rating of 1678 to 2152, but it took me many months of hard effort. And it wasn't just a question of my skills sharpening. Even with the sharpest skills, it's going to take you a lot of time to fix a very low, inaccurate rating. Much longer than it should. Playing at a 2000 level is just not enough to get you to 2000 for quite some time, because you can't attract high rated opponents who boost your rating when you beat them. Even at 2034 I am lucky to attract more than a few 2000+ players a day to my long rapid games.
This is exactly my problem. My rating fell quite low when I played as a relatively inexperienced player. I have improved, but beating 1800s does not boost my rating like it should. Fluke wins being rewarded is not a problem as the higher rating will be lowered with time anyway.

@tpr "Another complication of 3 check is that all time controls there are governed by 1 single rating..."
Hahaha, don't get me started on that point :p Why can't it be solved in the short term by having an r for rapid or u for ultrabullet beside all the ratings in the top 200 (say 75% of your games have to be in one category to qualify, ideally more, but I have no idea where a workable cut-off line would be), so people can click on the r or the u to see the top 100 in rapid or ultrabullet or blitz? Might encourage a three check rapid community. There's no incentive right now, when rapid ratings are lower than 1 min inflated three check ratings. If there is competition even for the top 20-50 in rapid, people will play rapid for the status of a high leaderboard place. And it's not clogging up lichess, because no one will ever see the rapid leaderboard unless they click the r beside a rapid rating on the main three check leaderboard. And then I can add the rapid guys and challenge them and play opponents with more accurate ratings.

@tpr , influx of massive new players help to increase the elo of old players.
However, if you are stacked in " Gulag" or " Booby Trap " or " Rating Trap", after losing the first 10-20 games, you will likely be stacked forever. :)

And I thought variants were only for fun, they are not serious competition. I don't think anyone should be serious about variant ratings. I only play variants casually.

At 2050 I have to win 90% of my games to win points against the players who accept my challenges. And in 3 check, white starts with a 2 point advantage before the first move. It's pretty much impossible to win 90% when you start at -2 in 50% of the games :) I do it fairly often, but it's exceptional, not the norm. An 85% win rate means I lose about 2 points overall after 24 games :) I mean, come on, it's just not fair. I know that opinion is not fashionable because it seems to conflict with the math. But unfair is unfair.

Let us do a scanerio, two new players come to play here, where both start with fresh 1500 elo.
Player A beat Player B and ,
Player A become 1800.
Player B become 1200.
Player A gets happy, more confident himself and keep playing a few couple of games ,win or loss 50/50, then get 1800 +/- 100.
Player B gets angry, get tilts, lose more games and ended up 1200+/-100.
In other words, it is like two fresh graduates who passed job hunting getting a decent life vs who failed job hunting getting a hortible life.
End of story!😁😆😅🤣😂

I was Player B there
@EnderShadow8 Well you don't understand 3 checks. The depth, the aesthetics of the brutal tactics - like the animal charisma of the tiger - the fascination, the utterly wowing firework tricks. There's a reason Anatoly Karpov excels in 3 check. Wish he had heard of lichess, sure he would love the place :) And always remember, chess is just one of the three major variants of a game which emerged in India in the sixth century AD.

Overplay in a day is major trap. I started here with few wins against 1500-1700 rated players with 45 and 35 moves, then lose from 1800 player and continue to lose, occsionally win, rating goes to the floor after 50 or so games in a row. That is quite unadequate strategy with this rating system. After registration and few wins, should be stop and get rest, continuing next time fresh. Or when lose only one game.

Nonsense, @EnderShadow8 . Your problem are the 58% defeats against an average opponent of 1467.
