Puzzle Themes Based on Opening Variation

Hi all, I have been spending a lot of time learning new opening variations and I thought it would be awesome if it was possible to use the LiChess Puzzle trainer to get tactics for specific opening variations only. Is there a way to add puzzle themes based on opening variation or perhaps based on ECO code? That would make this amazing training tool even better.

its not currently possible. You could use the study tag feature to learn about specific opening variations though. i hope they add this feature with puzzles soon.

Thank you for the reply. The thing is, I have lots of material on my openings. What I don't have is a systematic way of training tactics that typically occur in my openings. I am guessing that it would be easy to add this functionality to the LiChess puzzle database by having it select puzzles based on ECO. This in turn would make the already awesome LiChess puzzle trainer an even more indispensable tool for serious students of chess.

I read this aloud trying to learn the ways of the gibberish and I think I may have accidentally summoned a demon

You can set this up on ChessTempo by building a custom puzzle set based on a filter. I think you might need a premium membership to do it, but it's not expensive. Chessable and Chess King also have some puzzle sets for specific openings, I think.

Agree that it'd be a nice feature for Lichess, though.

Thank you, RamblinDave. I'll have a look at ChessTempo.

This is a great idea! I would definitely use this feature if it was available.

Have you posted in the Feedback forum also @megamatzo ? Might have more chance of getting picked up.

Well, in principle, each puzzle is linked to a game, for which pgn is also available. the header of which should contain the lichess detected opening name. So it could be possible to attach opening names to each puzzle.

In absence of lichess having opening names as possible extra category of themes (not tactical), or subcategory of phase category, one could extract from own puzzles, the opening themes. That might not be as big a task as first doing it for all lichess puzzles.

I have no clue actually about implementation difficulty. But the puzzle database is downloadable, and extra work with lichess API about obtaining PGN headers of corresponding games might be feasible.

I guess lichess could include the game full header with the puzzle (it already includes the prefix PGN). maybe it already does.
I don't know if that helps.

I am curious about the idea that certain openings might correspond to certain subset of tactical patterns.
How much is know about that. is that a shared experience among opening aware players that also play puzzles?

Thank you for the technical explanation, dboing. It is very much appreciated. I think training opening-specific tactics can be a very powerful tool, which, as you say, should be relatively easy to implement. It is surprising that none of the major chess sites offer it. It's a feature I'd be happy to pay for.
