Being a complete noob in using any chess software and databases, maybe someone could help me to start?
I would like to have some reasonable games database which I can search and explore. If I understand it correctly, I need:
- Software which reads the base
- Data base of the games
So the questions are:
- Which software is best for Mac users?
- Where can I download a database?
Thanks for any help!
P. S. My Mac is not strong enough to have virtual machine with Windows, so I am looking for a real Mac app.

@PumaFaisal thanks, I'll give it a try. What about the data base, is it also included?
P. S. Are you sure there is a Mac version? I don't see it on the official site, only for Windows (.exe)?

I am also a Mac user and also have been exploring this same questions. I have found two alternatives that are reasonable:
SCID vs PC:
http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net
and ChessX:
http://chessx.sourceforge.net
Both have a reasonably sized database that comes with them. Although with SCID, you need to go to the Support Files folder to find it:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/support%20files/
Both work pretty well, but I believe SCID is more full featured and it has a feature that I was looking for which is that is that it can bulk analyze all your games.

@SuperChooch thanks. I have scid (Scid vs Mac in my case), I just don't know how to include database.
So I go here https://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/support%20files/ and I download something like sa_database.tar.bz2 and open it in scid?
For ChessX I suppose I need a database in pgn format?

@LukaCro Correct. That is the database that I loaded as well. I don't exactly know the pedigree of that database but is has 83,000 games and lots of big names so it is at least something to start with. And yes, as far as I know, ChessX works with PGN DBs. But take what I'm saying with a grain of salt, because I'm also a newb with both of them. The SCID vs PC home page mentions Kingbase as a DB, but it appears the web page is defunct. I found this on archive.org, but haven't given it a try yet:

@LukaCro We are learning this together, real time :-) As I said, looks like Kingbase is defunct currently, but I followed this link:
https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/eqhbqt/does_anyone_know_what_happened_to_kingbasechessnet/
and found someone who seems to have taken up the gauntlet:
http://caissabase.co.uk/
This one seems to have 4M games.

@SuperChooch I've just downloaded KingBase2018-pgn.zip and it works fine with ChessX.

So after I've downloaded KingBase2018-pgn.zip, I extracted it an run this command in a terminal:
$ cat KingBase2018-* > KingBase2019-All.pgn
This gave me an 1.4 GB database with all the games in it. I imported it in ChessX and it works fine. Now I just need to figure out how to make adequate searches through it.

Cool! Curious what drew you toward ChessX versus SCID vs PC (Mac)? Or are you still planning to poke around at both?
