Quote: "You either believe in the sovereignty of people or you believe that everyone is victim of circumstance. "
Or you don't believe and observe what happens in the world. Then you see that this is a dimension and everybody can sometimes act and is sometimes bound to circumstances in different degrees. But seeing this needs some logic, patience, observation, questioning yourself instead of starting to express prejudices.

@Neustart
Either people have free will or they don't. Either we can choose our actions or we just play them out as predestination hands them to us. People are responsible for their own actions if they are capable of free will. Not accepting that runs into all kinds of logical contradictions. So for me the answer seems pretty clear.

Define "free" and "will". How about "freedom is acceptance of the necessity? How about beeing temporaly not guilty in consequence of a disease? Right, wrong, incomplete? " Freedom is one of the most discussed philosophical topics. If this had an easy solution like your proposal seems to imply, this wouldn't be discussed.
Running into logical contradictions might come from putting the wrong alternatives as fixed. Your answer is an example. Your basic idea is illogical. So the contradictions appear if looking at the reality.

Maybe the simple question is actually much more complex than expected ?

My friend it's a good question. I think that tends to happen to people that chase rating (not saying that's your case necessarily), or when they lose a game, they think they're not smart, so they play more games, to prove it to themselves that yes, I am not dumb after all.
Thing is to try to separate your chess from your self-worth, if that is possible. Other suggestions to base your self-worth are: Being a nice, moral person.
But on chess and intelligence, yes, they're related in a way, but even a computer can play good chess, and are computers intelligent? I don't think so... They're just machines... at least they're intelligent in different ways. Can a computer teach me what is love? There are kids that would trash 20 like me in a simul, but does that kid know a lot about life? It's difficult for a kid, even for an adult!
I understand people want to be great at chess, believe me I truly love this game, I like few things in life more than it. You can impress others with your queen sacrifices, but do you think that that will bring you true happiness? Magnus Carlsen has been unhappy with his level of play lately, he hit his desk in anger yesterday after a blunder! And in that popular youtube video, Jerry laughed his ass off when he got Scholar's Mated! I say that that is impressive as well, in a different way, of course. My point is that emotional intelligence is important too, maybe the MOST important thing in the end of the day.
Play to have fun, to give your brain a work-out, to develop a capacity to resist pressure, to learn not quit when things are going badly and hope seems lost. You don't need to win to benefit from this game. Play to enjoy the beauty of the game, not just for the ego of winning other people. Because if you play to win, and lose, that is time wasted. Whereas if you play for fun, you can get what you want with each game, even more when you do win! Hope that's food for thought, peace.

@neustart Clarity only comes by bringing complexity back to simple questions and answers.
It is not about freedom. It is about will.
If you have a choice then you are a person. You can decide your own actions. And logically other people can do the same.
If you do not accept that then what use is a discussion? You can't convince anyone because they are the only thing they can be. It is pointless to try and convince them because they don't have a choice.
What you are, how you are and who you are is a consequence of the choices you and others made previously.
