For me, it carried me until about 1800, some of my friends 1700 and for my older cousin about 2000. I'm very curious on how far people usually can go without studying. (Excluding puzzles, and actually picking up a book or a course) :D

Precisely 2000 was a realistic target...to overcome 2000 above...u need to know every detail about tactic and technic... that's means start studying

I dont think that is is even possible to increase 1 elo point without studying. Like you are literally saying that you reached 1800 without learning chess

And playing on the internet and watching chess videos (see your links) is not considered studying? @InstantNoodlePasta

I study always and forget 80% and restudy again and again and rush and lose focus and study more and forget more.
I'm basically rushing through not calculating enough lines bc I want the repetition of familiarity of positions. But it's a bad habit.
After I've played my openings another 6months I will start to focus heavily on slowing down and doing deeper calculations that I'm sure will forget halfway through.

I guess if you play or watch chess you study something. In the almost 50 years I play I must have learned something. The thing I never understood is prep or study openings... I played many otb games without any prep. And I laughed at anyone who said you have to study openings. I still see no point in studying openings but thats my kind of chess. And there is, luckily freedom of chess. Online I never study my mistakes because I just do not mind them... Errare humanum est

Apologies for being not specific enough. I meant more like purchasing courses, picking up a book or going to a real chess club to hear lectures.
