FIDE to launch investigation into Carlsen and Niemann

Seems unlikely but I wonder if this was done whether Carlsen could still circumnavigate a ban having a huge impact on his earnings potential.

One thing not really being discussed re this situation is the rising power of chess.com. Didn't they recently have some kind of financial deal / tie up with Carlsen? (Just my opinion, but I'm guessing post this was when Magnus became party to certain information re Niemann).

Anyway, if chess.com announced it was backing some rival tour to FIDE's which Carlsen would be taking part in, would banning Carlsen really have any effect? After all he's already stood down from defending the World title.

this is making magnus' actions in the sinquefield cup look worse.

magnus quit the sinquefield cup because he lost and strongly implied hans cheated to win.

now people, including fide, are backing away from hans cheated against magnus' in the sinquefield cup and making it hans cheated in other games in recent times and that excuses magnus' actions in the sinquefield cup.

if hans cheated online or otb in recent times, fair enough to ban him. but that doesn't excuse magnus' actions.

magnus should be sanctioned regardless of the outcome of the hans investigation. nothing extreme. but something, even if token.

I can't wait until all of this is over and I can enjoy watching magnus play again. but if magnus gets away scott free it's going to be harder to do. everyone makes mistakes, we should be understanding and forgiving, but I'd like to see some sort of acknowledgement from magnus and fide that what magnus did in the sinquefield cup was wrong.

Do you think Hans should be banned by FIDE purely for cheating on chess.com in games / events which were not under their jurisdiction? I can see that he cheated online but that would be a bit strange. Maybe a disrepute charge but I'd rather see FIDE enforce OTB action.

Exactly how I feel. I really hoped Magnus would come out with something solid rather than further insinuations. As it stands I'm not going to watch anything further from Magnus nor the lapdog Hikaru until things are settled and some form of apologies issued.

yeah. lichess and chess.com are important sites for a professional chess players career. fide should do their own investigation though and not just rely on the sites internal investigation.
They certainly are now but what about pre-covid / lockdown? This is something I find interesting...

Hans admitted he cheated on chess.com when aged 13 and 16 (I think). So six and three years ago. Is it possible at that time some players (and this isn't intended as a defence of Hans) viewed online play then as more of a training tool? Could it be that we are viewing some players actions (and again not Hans, nor Hans alone - I believe chess.com's "file" contains a good number of top ranked players) through today's lens rather than that of the time?
